Need a used trans, what's the highest mileage?

Looking for a used trans to replace my 2000 152k mile trans which has taken a dump ever since having to replace oil after a solenoid went bad. My concern is finding a low mileage one.

From what I understand, I should only get a trans from a 99 or 2000. If this is incorrect please advice. its a 2000 Auto Ltd. I know I cant do 01-02, unsure about previous years. I have found one with ~250k from the same year but I'm not sure if I should bother with it being such high mileage.

You can only use one from a 99-00. If you can find one with the tcase still attached that'll make your life a little easier. Also try to get the torque converter from the same donor. Lastly make sure you add a trans cooler during this process.

Finding a transmission with 250k on it isn't too bad considering the age of the vehicle. Just as long as that donor wasn't a victim of the dreaded milkshake you "should" be OK.

Yeah, 99-00 is what you want. The 96-98's are different, the valve body changed style.

Mileage matters less than maintenance. If you have the chance to inspect before you buy, you can take off the pan and see how many metal shavings are there. Just having a slight "sludge" on the magnets is ok, anything with visible metal shavings or ones you can "feel" like sand, is bad.

I have a 4WD transmission from a 99 in my backyard at the moment, but Ohio is a bit far from me That'd be quite the drive!

I have '97 trans in my '99 and it runs without problems and shifts great. It would be better to stay within the '99-'00 range, but the earlier transmission should still work find.

The valve body differences are internal and don't seem to have an effect on operation.

Personally, I wouldn't put one in that has 250k on it. I found with 130k on it. I would at least try to find one that's sub 150k - 175k. I agree with gamefreakgc though. No matter what, it's a crapshoot unless you can confirm the maintenance history. That's unlikely though.

I've got almost 5k on mine with no issues to far.

Out of curiosity couldn't he just get a rebuilt one wouldn't that be better?

Echoing not to worry about high mileage. If it's high mileage it's probably a lot of highway miles. Highway means less shifting and less wear. I'd take a 250k tranny over a 100k NYC tranny any day.
