Need advice from more educated

Long time lurker first time poster. Need some help in deciding between two different used 4th Gens. I currently already own a 2006 Sr5 v6, looking to add another runner to the family. The two I have narrowed down to are another 2006 sr5 v6 with 70K miles in Salasa Red, the other is 2006 Sport w/ V8 in white and 105k miles. The price is almost the same between the two of them. The decision I am having trouble making is I know the reliability I have had with the v6 so am I taking a risk buying a used V8? It hasn't had the timing belt done that I know of so I know that i'd have to get that done is there anything I should worry about with the V8? XRAS? Reliability? Thanks for any insight any one can provide

If you have a v6 and like the v6 then get the v6 with less miles with the price being the same. The Salsa Red is sharp too IMO.

Is there a reason your were looking at the v8 other than the v8 itself? It sounds like the v6 would be a better deal unless you had something in particular that you wanted the v8 for.

I like the V8, the XRAS on mine lasted 175,000 miles without any problems. I really is a better ride than the stock SR5 I have know.

if you want the V8 and you know the timing belt hasn't been changed you could use that as a bargaining chip to lower the price a bit since it needs replacing at that mileage. The 4.7 is a great engine very reliable with the correct maintenance, cant really say anything about the x-reas since I don't have it.

No reason for the v8 except the added power and extra towing capacity if/ when needed. As an added wrinkle I'd like to turn this into more of a off road capable vehicle and have my previous 4runner be more of the "grocery getter" for the wife. So I am mostly trying to determine if the added 30k miles makes much of a big difference. I know its trivial in the end, either one is a great rig. Just curious on peoples opinions if the added power is worth the extra miles.

Well hey who wouldn't like extra power! If you plan on making your second runner more off-road capable the V8 would be a good choice with the extra torque and hp for bigger wheels/tires, aftermarket bumpers and weight added it takes to make a serious off-road vehicle.

i do agree with this, not much of a fan of white unless you black out all the chrome

Id say go with the V8. If you want to make it more offroad capable, the V8 will definitely help. I have a V6 and my Dad has the V8, both are sports, and I often wish I had the extra power. But in the end, its up to you, its your car

The 4.7 V8 is a great motor, especially if you're gonna run larger tires. You should be able to use the timing belt as a bargaining chip to lower the price. That's typically a $800-$1000 service. I average about 13-14 mpg with the V8, mostly around town with a 3/2 lift and AT tires.

It's a Toyota.... another 30K won't make much of a difference. Consider which one is in better shape and whether you want the V8. Since your V6 is the DD, I'd lean towards the 4.7 and worse MPG after lift/tires...but more HP and torque. Make sure neither were owned in a state where roads are salted. I made that mistake with my first 4Runner.

My wife drives a 2008 Sport V6 bought with 36k mi and now with 85k mi. For work she put on over 30K in miles in one year. I am now seeing how those 30K miles really beat it up like front bearing, idler pulleys, shocks.

Also, I wouldn't want to finance anything over 100k AND I always consider why someone is dumping a vehicle at the mileage they are. Something has inspired them, perhaps mounting problems...

Another difference is the 4 wheel drive system. The V8 has full time 4 wheel drive, the V6 is selectable.

Xreas is a better ride but if you are going to do a lift you will probably be replacing that anyways.

I had a 2003 Limited V8 with Xreas. Put on Daystar spacers and went anywhere I wanted to go. I don't do extreme technical stuff but I like to go where I want to.

Now I have a 2005 Sport V6. It is lifted with King shocks. I like this one better than the limited. It is Salsa Red and that is one sharp color.

I am taking it out wheeling in about 2 hours for the first time so I cant compare it to the Limited yet. But on the road, it is just as peppy as the V8 was and mileage seems to be just a tad better

Seriously though, we have one of each and I love them both (of course the V8 a little more) but I still want a Taco.
