The truck can be out of inspection (as long as the truck is outside the state its registered in), and he most certainly does not need to change his lisence, its legal to be in cali for as long as he wants, so long as he "lives" in SC, I stay in NY for 10 months a year but i "live" in CT and my truck is in NY for 10 months a year but my truck and i are allowed to be in NY as long as we want.

I have friends that "live" in NY but spend just shy of 6 months a year in Cali, with no issues and thats with a NY registered vehicle out there that hasnt been inspected in many years...if the vehicle comes back to NY it needs to be inspected within 2 days as its expired.

Not true. According to the Ca DMV site ... "Nonresidents whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state or jurisdiction may operate their vehicles in California until they:

• Accept gainful employment in California.
• Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
• Rent or lease a residence in California
• Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote).
• Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll their dependents in school (K-12)"

So if you are renting or accept a job in Ca, you will legally need to register your car. My buddy in college ran into this. Although he "lived" in Boston, he eventually got pulled over and had to register in Ca.

That being said, you should probably be fine for 6 months. If you ever do get pulled over, you could probably talk your way out of it. Cops in LA have bigger things to worry about.

For the OP. Few things.

1) I would take the company car. I currently drive my company car as much as possible and it is nice not putting unnecessary miles on my 4Runner, esp during a cross country drive.

2) Spend a week or two in an extended stay hotel when you get out there. It will allow you to get to know the area and find where is a good fit for you. Also, it can allow you to do a few mock commutes to figure out how bad traffic is. I did this when I relocated for my job recently and it helps to not rush into anything.

3) I went to college in Eagle Rock, so right around that area. It is nice because you are pretty close to most everything in LA. If you do bring your 4Runner, you are pretty close to Big Bear which has some awesome wheeling, also Hollywood and Downtown LA is just 20min away. Pasadena is another great area to look at, it is a little further from Glendale but if I was still living in SoCal I could see myself living in Old Town Pasadena. There is a lot to do and it is a very nice area.

It seems like it has so far.

This is actually a Co-op, but the pay is pretty good and working with Nestle should be great. All this was set up through Clemson. They were awesome at getting big companies to come interview for positions.

Is it possible to find places out there that would pass me even with tint, deckplate, etc...?

Anybody know how much it costs to ship a vehicle on a truck? I'm thinking I might be able to pay for that plus a plane ticket.

I'm not gonna lie, my 4Runner doesn't have the most plush highway ride. I don't know if I could stand it for ~2,300 miles.

BUT if they just give me like a Kia or something like that I think I would definitely take the 4Runner. I don't know if I could stand driving a little two door car around for six months.

We're definitely gonna have to get together when I move over there. I wanna meet some of you SoCal guys.

Alright i see, BUT i doubt he will have an issue considering his vehicle is probably not registered in his name considering he is a college kid and so long as his parents dont live in CA there shouldnt be an issue, and i think there is a grace period to get your lisence changed which i doubt he needs to do considering he is probably still a dependent on his parents taxes so i really do doubt that he is legally obligated to reregister the car that is in his parents names. (i assume that his truck is in his parents name, and he is still a dependent to their taxes)

I'm not arguing, i just feel like it's completley legal for him to take the 4runner there, as long as the truck isnt in his name. My truck isnt in my name...

Clemson's Career Services Department is the best, my cousins and a couple of friends have been the recipients of their hard work along with yourself it looks like.

Internships and co-ops are the best ways to learn. I did not have the opportunity for the latter, so I was limited in that respect during my college matriculation.

Live close to Nestle, otherwise you will experience a gas price shock to fill up the 4runner in CA. Traffic can be 10x worse than Saturday mornings on Hwy 123 during football season.

I think he'll be fine, so long as the registration tags are current, and his license does not expire while he's here. Probably no need to register his car or change his license. My girlfriend drove with Washington plates for over 7 months in Glendale without issue. He might have some issues when he files his taxes, but a qualified CPA should be able to figure that out.

I second staying at an "extended stay" hotel (I'd have to look for a link to one), it might actually be cheaper than renting an apartment.

As long as the front driver and passenger windows are not tinted, you will be fine (factory tint is fine). You can have the back windows as dark as you like (as per CA law last I checked). Mine are almost blacked out FWIW...Most tint shops will do the fronts if you ask (and also take it off too), and it's usually a "fix-it" ticket if they pull you over. I can't speak for the emissions, but it might be worth getting a stock box if your going to register your truck here.

Cops around here won't usually pull you over unless your loudly playing your music, your exhaust is pretty loud, or your driving like a maniac.

I'd get some new shocks and make a cool cross-country roadtrip out of it. Lots of things to see on the way!

Let them give you rental for in-town driving, a corolla rental would be perfect to drive during the week, then you can run the 4runner on the weekends!
