The GX470 should really only big bigger on the inside than a 4th gen 4Runner in terms of head room due to the raised roof, they are otherwise pretty well the same vehicle (exact same drivetrain as a V8 AWD 4th gen). The headroom is nice, but it doesn't help you carry more people or cargo. The interior is very nice though, no question about that.

That's precisely why I didn't buy a 4th gen 4Runner. The lack of headroom.

Interestingly, I was trying to get the wife into a 4th gen 4Runner, we sat in one at the dealership, and the salesguy's hair was hitting the roof in the 2nd row seats until I told him to recline the rear seatback, and then he was fine. It's a complete non-issue in the GX470, much more headroom. She didn't like the interior in the 4th gen 4Runner though, so that was a deal breaker. I MUCH prefer the 4Runner tailgate with power rear window to the goofy barn door that hinges towards the curb on the GX470 though, Lexus really should have re-worked that to hinge away from the curb at the very least. Makes no sense in a LHD market.

Now that I have looked at it again, the Sequioa seems like a good choice too. I like the idea of a Toyota over Chevy, although I'm not too sure on the long term reliability of the V-8 Engine past 250k miles.

One of the best v8's built. Was even tested and approved for aviation applications. I worked at the largest Toyota dealer in the NW and I routinely have seen the 4.7 into the 300k mark. Production standards and materials are tops in the industry .

Had Both...at the same time

2008 Sequoia and a 1997 Bruiser (known here as "The Beast" and "The Bruise"). Sequoia has muuuuch more room which is great as kids get bigger. If you can find 4 buckets instead of a center bench, go for it. Now that they're driving themselves, I traded the Beast for 2 4runners. The Bruiser is here for life. Also have the GX470, the third row is meh...too cramped after elementary school and they take up a lot of storage space. Not a whole lot of difference in milage 11 mpg vs 13.

A well serviced with 150 no problem...bought my first 4.7 with 130k you would never know. Still would be going if it hadn't gave up its life to save mine.

I would say be on the lookout for a 7.3 diesel Excursion, as those bad boys can push some power, get decent MPG's, and run forever, but they tend to have cam sensor issues. That can be alleviated with a commercial sensor they put in buses and such, though. Plus, they're quite massive, fit a full load of football players and ladies on the way to the lake towing a 24 footer behind it without an issue.

Very reliable '03 sequoia with 170k miles. The sequoia has one of the absolute best engines ever made as far as durability and longevity. We actually hate to part with it, but don't need a third vehicle sitting around that never gets used. We have had no problems with this vehicle and have kept up with regular maintenance. Aside from it being 11 years old and having some cosmetic flaws, it is an extremely reliable vehicle. The brakes and brake pads are almost brand new and the YAW sensor (stability sensor that applies mostly to driving in snow) has been replaced so that the new owner doesn't have to worry about it. It has not been involved in any accidents. Any recall notices we received have been taken care of. Both front door handles are new as well as the back/rear door handle.

Make sure tbelt water pump cam crank seals and idler tensioners have been done. The 4.7 is an interferance motor. Also have exhaust manifolds ever been done. If you hear a little ticking exhaust leak that goes away as it warms they will need replacement. If it were going to be a problem it would have happened by now. I would offer 6500 and go up depending on condition.

The tbelt service with pump etc. Is over a grand at the dealer and exhaust manifolds are the same. If they had it done around 90-100k it.will be up in another 25k or so. They can go much longer but I would use it to drive the price down a grand at least.

Just to make sure you're aware, that same 4.7 V8 is in the V8 4th gen 4Runners, Tundras, GX470's, LX470's, 100 series LC's, Sequoia's, etc. It's a very common engine, so don't narrow your search to the Sequoia thinking it's the only place you can find that engine.

Even if you don't think she is gonna need it, get a 4x4! If nothing more than for just resale value. A 4 wheel drive Toyota with a ton of miles will still bring good money especially compared to a 2wd....I do this for a living, I see it all the time.

I just checked out a 2011 sequoia yesterday.. Wow. I am clearly living in the 1990s. That thing intimidated the stuffing out of me. I like the comfort of my simple 4runner and feeling like I can fix things that go wrong with it. I'm scared to death of that thing.

There is 2 variations. The VVTI and non VVTI.

There also the motors that are made in the US and those made in Japan.

They are great according to my buddy who has kids. With that 43-50ish MPG you could go on a lot of road trips. At least test drive one.

Besides you aren't letting her talk you into selling the 4Runner so you're still a man.

I have a 4Runner and a 13' Lexus CT-200h hybrid. I love having both, the only thing missing is a sports car.
