Need Advice!

Hi all!

I'm brand new and this is my first post! That being said, I am currently looking at toyota 4runners in the DFW area and found a 2013 SR5 with 36000 miles on it. It used to be a fleet/rental car which explains the high mileage. I checked the car fax and it seems to be okay.

It comes with a 12 month bumper to bumper warranty and a 100,000 mile power train. The dealership wants 26,900 for it, I offered lower but they are literally not moving a dollar on their price.

What do y'all think? Is their price actually that good? I've checked Kelley Blue Book and other sites and it seems to be lower than what those sites suggest but I wanted some expert opinions. Thanks in advance!

I would never ever buy a fleet/rental car.

People who drive them (people like me) don't give a damn about fleet/rental cars. Because they are fully insured by the "corporation/rental agency" and people like me get to expense the gasoline.

This means WOT at every chance, including when the car was brand spanking new. Using it to move and tow stuff and not being gentle to the car. Plus because the 4runner has some offroad ability, I'll take it to a job site in a remote area and drive it through the brush and not care either. So the mother nature pinstripping you get when going through the brush is hidden by professionally polishing the crap out of the clear coat and 4 layers of wax.

Stay away from former fleet/rental cars. Think of them as the crack whores of the auto world. Then go find a better one, for less money.

There's a reason used rental cars are cheaper than regular used cars. And they're still overpriced. Don't take the chance.

Rental cars are a prime example of the Tragedy of the Commons. They are used by people who don't own them. They will have mechanical issues earlier than other vehicles, even vehicles of the same mileage. Whether that's worth the lower buying price is up to you, but if I was going to drop $26,000 on a newish car, it wouldn't be that one.

Per your advice, I will be taking a different route and buying a used one with less mileage and better reputation AKA not a rental or fleet vehicle. Thanks again! Don't know where you're located in the Dallas area but if you do find a 4-Runner the Toyota Tech I use is at Toyota of Plano and IMO is the best tech anywhere. I wouldn't let anybody else touch my FJ or my 4-Runner (and I have LOTS of work done on both of them). You can PM me if you ever need any work done and I'll forward his contact info.
