So that's the "upgraded/desired" hitch.

Mine is below, which is the less beefy, not desirable hitch, correct?

The pics you posted are of the V6 standard duty hitch. It is rated for 500 lbs tongue weight and a max of 5k towing weight. It would be ok for light towing (small trailer, boat, or utility trailer). It is not compatible with any type of weight distribution tow bar. I wouldn't necessarily call it "undesirable". It will work well if used within its limitations. If you want to tow heavier loads, then a frame mounted aftermarket hitch will be needed.

Sorry I know this is an old thread but is it worth it to replace the original receiver with an after market frame mounted class 3? Does a distribution hitch make a big difference with a 3000 - 3500 trailer.

Yes. I towed a 2000# pup on a V6 Rav4 and it made a huge difference. On my 3rd gen I installed a WDH compatible frame mounted receiver and towed a 3800# pup as well. It levels the 4R and distributes the weight across all the axles. I wouldn't tow a trailer without one. It makes towing a safer experience. That and some air bag spring helpers for the rear. Makes the ride much smoother.
