Need an engine rebuild in Orange County, CA

I just took my 95 Runner in for an oil change and my mechanic called me up with some grim news. He said there's a lot of pressure build up in the engine and it's blowing oil into the air filter. So now I've got some decisions to make. Rebuild the engine, swap it, or junk the truck and start over? I just put new OME shocks and rear springs on 2 weeks ago and have new brakes and tires in the last year.
Can anyone recommend a shop in Orange County that works on Toyotas? I have no idea what a rebuild vs swap costs and would love to talk to someone more familiar with those options. This isn't something I can work on myself since I don't have a garage or proper tools.

I called these guys three weeks ago, they're in Portland, Oregon.

He told me:

$1,500 for a re-furbished V6 (3-year warranty)

or

$1,700 for a re-manufactured V6 (2-year warranty)

(and around $700 for a pull and install)

Maybe go up there, buy one, bring it back, have it installed?

or maybe tow your 4Runner up there, have them pull the engine and install another one?

Do you have any family or friends close by that can help you work on your 4runner? At a minimum I would suggest find a rebuilt motor from an online source and have a friend help you with it.

Who knows... you could junk your current 4runner and start with something else, but until you drive it for a while and get to know it, you're rolling the dice on what you get.

Did they do the install for you, or did you have it done somewhere else?

Wish I did know someone. Would love to learn about the 4Runner more. I really don't want to junk it since it has new brakes and suspension. I figure if I put a new engine in, I can drive it for another 5-6 years and then upgrade.

Not being from O/C I couldn't be of too much help to you. But I would be afraid to take my 4runner into a shop blindly and have them replace or rebuild a motor. I would like to have some experience with them and know they are an honest shop.

If I were in your spot, I would find a rebuilt motor from a good online source. Have that motor shipped to your house and take that motor to the shop and have them install it. If you're unsure about a shop then do some digging around through the BBB until you're satisfied.

I looked up Kar King on Yelp. Only a few reviews, but all good. The BBB site shows a few complaints over the last few years. I may stop by next time I'm in that area to check out the shop and talk with them. The engine seems to be running fine right now. I'm hoping it will make it past the next smog check at least.
