Need expert advise on Expo Rig

I've been conservatively building my runner for the past couple years and I think its time for a bigger rig. I'm wanting a rig I can fully camp out of that will also serve as a DD. My options are get a roof tent for my current rig, buy an 80 series, or upgrade to a 4th gen. If I could find a well built Sequoia I'd love that too!

Heres what I'm looking at and 2 of these came from this site;

LC: 1997 Toyota FZJ80 Landcruiser - Factory LOCKERS

T4r: Lifted 2004 Toyota 4runner V8.

T4r: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-...8-4wd-89k-3-lift-285-duratracs-$15-500-a.html

I'd like 3rd row that I can fold up and sleep in the back. The LC scares me with it being a 97 and 200K. What do you guys think? What would you do?

I will be selling my 08 4x4 Taco and runner to fund this next rig.

I agree. It will also, more than likely, be the most capable rig out of the three. But that one makes me the most nervous with the age and miles. Not to mention it probably has had lots of trail time.

I just keep telling myself that its a yota so it wont need much $$$ in repairs.

I really dig the Land Cruiser, looks to be in good shape with all the necessities. Only concern might be high miles/maintenance?

Also, if you're looking for a V8 4runner, I would look for a 2006+ due to the VVTi update starting that year.

The only issue I've had with the V8 is a leaky exhaust manifold/ticking...other than that these V8's are one of my favorites to date.

HOJeepster I have to agree the LC in pretty Gnarly. Is it worth the asking price you think? It does look to be in awesome shape.
The 4.7 is a great engine! Yes I know about the pre 06 v8 issues but I have a budget and would like a built rig so I can start wheeling when I get it.

OR buy or build a trailer.

The 80 is the only real option in my mind. It will also have tons of aftermarket options not available for a 4R.

If it were me, I would get the 80 and never look back. 200K miles is nothing on these motors if it's been well maintained. They are known for 350+, they like all things have their quirks and as long as those have been addressed you should be good to go.

I have had the same questions myself and looked at everything you mentioned. I ended up 3rd Gen because I don't have a lot of money to throw at my rig, so it was a big compromise for me... But if it wasn't a money issue,
4th Gen all the way!!!

Engine - The V8 is night and day better than the straight 6 in the LC. I am sure you are aware of the head gasket problems on the LC's. Not to mention the age is more of a concern to me than miles. Years can be hard on all the gaskets, filters and seals. I would be willing to bet you will spend a lot of time chasing nagging leaks and what not. I personally would never do an LC unless I did a re-build on the motor. I read a lot of build threads on 1H8Mud and most people had dumped at least $1000 in engine maintenance over the first couple years...

Use - You say this will be a DD and "expo" rig. For DD the 4th gen is a clear win. They ride super smooth and have all the creature comforts you want from a DD. Plus they get better MPG if that is a concern. Then you mentioned it was for expo use. For long trips over moderate terrain a 4th gen will do everything you throw at it. I didn't really look hard at the two you linked, but an e-locker or LSD in the 4th gen will get you there no problem. If you wanted to get real carried away to make sure you were good, get an ARB for the front diff and you will be perfect. It's no lie that the LC is the better trail rig, but are you gunna be doing a bunch of crawling? If not, a 4th gen will do some pritty remarkable things for the rig.

LC thoughts - Great rigs for the person who has the budget and time to do it right. If you have the money to do some heavy maintenance at the start, you will have no problem using it for a long time if you keep up on the routine stuff. Parts are expensive, and things are old so it is not a small undertaking if you ask me. I looked very heavy into building an LC and the maintenance is what scared me away for the time being.

4th Gen - I can't say enough about how much I love these things. My wife drives one and it is the go to vehicle every time we go somewhere. It has the 4.0 which still feels very powerful for the rig. I would even venture to say a well built rig with a 4.0 would be worth buying, mine gets up and goes! Remeber the V8's are full time AWD, good for snowy places but bad for commuting. They ride almost as nice as a car on the road, and we get 20 mpg average (2wd). The after market options are great, and with a few key things a 4th gen will do just about anything. For the expo stand point, most of the replacement parts are the same as a tacoma too so parts are easy to come by on the trail or in some weird place, easier than an LC anyways. I was only able to look at the 1st 4th gen you posted, and didn't skower the build, but it looked like an awesome start, and was very good looking too.

It really depends on what you mean by 'expedition rig' (BTW, you might check on expeditionportal.com, but there the LCs rule the roost). If you want a car-camper rig (that is, don't really plan to travel the Amazon Basin for months at a time) the LC is probably overkill. It does have room for goodies, will be the most rugged (I worked on a friend's LX450 recently and the rear end on that thing is like a 1 ton truck rear), and probably the most capable (again, depending on what you plan to do with it).

However, that LC is pretty expensive for that year and miles. I found a 96 LX450 for my friend with 196K on it for $3,300. He put another $700 in it for maintenance (repack front bearings, new A/C compressor, various other minor things), and $1000 for an OME lift. He wants an ARB bumper and winch, and will go with Cooper AT3 tires. Those additions will add about $2500 to it. So his total investment will be about $8000 and it will be about as good as the one for $13,500. He won't have lockers, but adding ARB air lockers would still have him at just over $10,000. It was also driven by a lady school teacher so it is pretty much an off-road virgin (built trucks usually have had an 'exciting' life and I try to avoid them). If you want to do the build, there are better deals out there.

The 4th gen would be a good option, with a little more room than the 3rd gen, and of course, newer. Those prices are reasonable, but I've seen them for less. I looked at an 06 GX470 a while back with about 90,000 that was perfect for about $13,000 at a dealer. Of the ones you linked to, the 04 is not a bad buy, but again, it's probably had an exciting life. If you want a real 'expedition' or overlanding rig, the key feature you want is reliability, and a truck that has had an exciting life, or with too many hard-core rock-crawling doodads, will likely suffer in that department. If the 04 has what you want on it, and you're not afraid if its history, you couldn't build one for that price with those mods.

If you just want to be self-contained and be able to sleep, and your current rig will go where you want and do what you want, the RTT is the cheapest option. You already know it, and it's going to get MUCH better mileage than the LC (think 12 MPG around town and a little more on the highway, which will add $$$ quickly if it's a DD). I have the itch for an LC about every 3 weeks, but since I drive my 3rd gen everywhere, the gas $$$ would break my budget (the 3rd gen is bad enough). And unless you are going out west to do your 'expeditioning', the 3rd gen will go places the LC won't (in the midwest, where I live, many of the Forest Service roads I run are too narrow and brushy for an LC to get down without serious damage, and I've been on some an LC just would not get down at all because of the size). And there's no vehicle cheaper than the one you already own. But, again, it really depends on what you mean by 'expedition rig'.

My vote is the RTT. I like the ease of working on the 3rd gens, they are plenty comfortable as a dd, and in comparison to some other vehicles they are fairly cheap to build. ^^^ Also what he said about the narrow trails in the midwest. The 4runner is big enough.

see working on it and Rtt at the same time :P

the only real draw back of the LC is the gas mileage, i wouldn't be scared of the age and the miles on the one you are looking at, the price seems somewhat fair considering the upgrades, i think you may be able to talk him down a bit.

the thing is they aren't making anymore of those, so a well maintained one is going to cost you a bit of cash, that price is only marginally more expensive that what i am seeing around here.

back to the gas mileage thing, if it's your DD it's going to cost you alot more in the long run than just the initial up front cost, beyond that the LC is superior in almost every way over the 4runner, but..... then again the 4runner is plenty capable as it is...

if you want a bigger rig, go with the LC, if you think you can make do with the 4runner, it'll serve you well, there's really no right answer here, it's really a matter of personal choice and what you specifically need, either one won't let you down though.

Thank yo for all the responses! Lots of food for thought.
The fuel economy of the LC is around 11mpg according to the seller. My current 3rd gen t4r barely gets above that as is. When I calculated it I was around 14mpg so not too much of a change.
The off roading I will be doing won't be very extreme so I know an LC is overkill for me. I'm still on the hunt for a solid Chinook build.
