Need help choosing a tire

I need to get some new tires but I don't really know much about them at all. My 2002 4Runner currently has 265/70/16 Dunlop's on them, they were on it when I bought it. I want to get the best price I can but I don't want a piece of crap either.

I've called around and here are some I found locally from wallyworld to Big O. Price is out the door price, may not include sales tax, no road hazard warranty.

Goodyear Tracker 2 - $478
Uniroyal - $518
Geo Trac - $560
Goodyear Wrangler HP - $618
Trizano - $490 - (Not sure if this name is right, that's what it sounded like but I can't find it online)

The only one I have heard about specifically is the Wrangler HP but I don't know if it is worth $50-$100 more for it compared to the Tracker 2


Are the road hazard warranties worth it? I don't have a habit of running over nails or blowing tires, from what I have heard is it is a waste of money in most cases.

So is this for just an all-season tire? Will you be off-roading at all? Not too sure about highway tires, but I know Michelin's wear like a rock (LTX M/S).

Also, Big O seems to be a bit more expensive than Discount Tire. Do some research on tirerack.com. They usually have pretty good reviews.

And I've never gotten one of those hazard warrantees.
 
Tire warranties are a bunch of crap. Waste of $$ IMO, and only about 1-3% of people get anything at all from them (or so I've been told by a friend who owned a tire shop).

from what I've heard the new Bridgstone Revo 2's are amazing on/off road tires for the size you're looking for. personally I've heard some good reviews about them. Here's one link on tirerack you can see for yourself.
the only problem is that depending on where you live, you might have to wait up to a month to get them(I am).

Well then I'm one of 1-3%
My sister smoked a curb in my old jeep, ending up popping two tires, and $30 worth of road hazard saved me from buying two brand new tires.

I actually have received 4 brand new BFG A/Ts from discount tire on a road hazard. They had a manufacturers defect that showed up after 60,000 miles. I was having them rotated one last time and then I needed to replace them. They pointed out the defect and BFG was paying some for the tires based on how much tread was left. It ended up they were going to give me $15 per tire for the wear that was left. Showed Discount tire my road hazard warranty and they put 4 brand new BFG A/T KOs on my Jeep free of charge. This was awhile ago, they may have gotten stingier since then. It is nice being one of the 1-3%.
 
Wow, maybe tire warranties have gotten better in the last few years! Or maybe Discount has better than average warranties. Every time I've ever tried to get my tires pro-rated they've told me to pound sand because I live in the mtns (even though their warranty says nothing about excluding mtn driving). My friend owned a Bridgestone store.
 
Thanks for the info guys. I mainly just need a road tire with about two weeks a year worth of snow driving.

Out of the tires and prices I listed above what do you think is the best one to go with?
 
I'm not really sure which one of those would be best in snow. They are all very tame tires.

How about the Michelin LTX or the Revo 2?

Unless you know someone who works at a tire shop. I have a buddy(i don't agree with this) but he works there and when his tires get low tread, he pops a nail in one and they replace it for free(they don't patch anymore), brand new tire for $12. He doesn't do them all at the same time. But if your a desperate college student low on cash . . .

Also i love my nitto terra grapplers they handle great! No road noise and tear it up in the snow

That's so messed up. Guess people don't have the character they once had.
 
I think wally world has a set of Uniroyal Laredo Cross Countryfor $518 plus sales tax. From what I have read they are pretty decent tires. Anyone have good or bad info about them?
 
master yoder, personally, i wouldnt get any of the ones you mentioned. misch ltx or revo 2 , firestone destination at, GY wrangler silent armor or fortera ,are much better choices
