Odyssey batteries are rated with Operating temperature range: -40°C (-40°F) to 80°C (176°F). I remember looking this one up when I was replacing my s2000 battery. Track guys would kill their batteries quickly with crazy high underhood temps.
I just looked up a standard interstate battery... it says:-20ºC(-4ºF)~50ºC(122ºF)
The product PDF has a life expectancy chart showing <1 year service life when above 50C operating.
I'm sure the underhood temperatures when rock-crawling in 100º weather must get pretty insane.
Today's high in Moab was 104º.
Glad you got out.
I just picked up this battery/jumper for $60 from Costco for my recent solo White Rim trip. Haven't had the occasion to use it, but I figure if I charge it before each trip, at least I'll have a prayer of getting started if something weird happens. It's small and has USB charge ports, as well. Of course, may not have helped an overheated battery...

Whew, That was a close one....Glad you got it going.
I thought for sure we would see tomorrows headline read something like...
"Man dies in stranded in desert while using cell phone to talk to armchair mechanics......when he could have just CALLED A TOW TRUCK"

Good luck getting a tow truck to come get you here.
They'll happily come get you, just the bill will be over $1000.
