Need help figuring out which suspension to get

I have 2005 V8 Sport with 93,000 miles on it and I think my XREAS is starting to go. So, I have been searching t4r and toyota120 for suspension reviews, pictures, etc. and have driven myself crazy.

Here are my goals:

mild to medium lift ( I like the look of the DS 2/1)
great on road handling (99% DD but would like to go off road more)
Good off road handling


I've narrowed it down to the OW 2.0, FJ Cruiser bilstein setup, or Toytec ultimate, however I am open to others or hybrids.

From what I can tell, the OW setup would be the ultimate suspension for $1400. I love everything about it except the 2-2.5" lift in the rear. I just think that it would be too high. I am running 265/70/17's now which may make the gap in the rear look huge. I am all for getting bigger tires, but don't want to kill the MPG's or have to trim my bumper. I may be getting spacers as well, so...

Thought about the above setup with different rear springs, but don't know which to get to give me less than the 2" of the OW.

The FJ setup is very economical, but adding spacers will limit the performance of the springs, so does it make sense to go this direction? Maybe so maybe not.

I just don't know what to do. Any feedback/opinions would be helpful. Also, if anyone has pictures of their rig with the OW 2.0, I would love to see them!

Have you considered OME? (Old Man Emu)

Not 100% sure the best place to purchase, others can chime in there.


I did research on OW and Toytec. I'll ask what they asked me. What type of wheeling are you talking? Rocks, Fire Trails? My best solution was the OW lift as I want to go play in the desert and only rocks every now and then. The Toytec, from what they told me, is better in the rocks. I think for what you are wanting though, the OME is more economical and will fit all your needs.

I went with Bilstein 5100s F&R and OME Coils. LOVE IT!
 
if you want mild lift with excellent handling on and off road i would say go for the bilstein front adjustables up to 2.5'' of lift and rear shocks (Bilstein Height adjustable front and matching 5100 Rear shoc - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits) along with either some toytec super flex rear coils or OME 895 coils. Rear OME 895 & 895E Rear Coils (FJ & 03-09 4Run) - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits whole package would be around 600 dollars.

or go with OME as someone above stated.
 
I live in Georgia so most of my wheeling will be mountain trails, mud, maybe some rocks, and sometimes I hit the beaches in NC. I called toytec today and asked them about the height of the rear icon, OME, and toytec springs and they said they would all provide about 2" of lift. If that is true, I might as well get the OW 2.0.

From what I have learned from the boards, the OME setup will be very stiff especially in the rear especially since 99% of the time I will be unloaded. I dont have any heavy gear and don't plan on a bumper.
 
get the light OME coils, they lift 1.5'' and if you plan on no gear get light OME shocks and it should ride great
 
I am going to research those light OME coils today. so should I get those coils with the OW 2.0 front and OW rear shocks?
 
OW shocks might be too stiff for the coils, i would say go one company for shocks and coils in the rear. i didnt and my rear ride is stiff and bumpy at times depending on the angle of a rut.

OW 2.0 up front would be great, especially if your cranking it to 2.5 inches and not all the way to 3.5 inches as it will provide a greater ride. of course in the future if you want more lift you can crank em up but will lose some of the ride quality

I am thinking that I am going to go OW 2.0 in front, and maybe OME 895E or SAW coils in the back with a shock from someone...don't know yet.

I have also reconsidered going OME all over.

I would only use 2" of the lift at first, but like the fact that I could crank it up if needed.
 
Why not get ICON coil overs ($1000) and their rear shocks. You can adjust the front from stock to +3". So you can level your truck with a 2" lift in front. Or you get the 2" rear springs and your truck will look great and ride awesome too.

I really like the look of your Icon setup. How much lift did you get in the rear? Are the front adjustable? What size tires are you running in that profile picture?

I like the look of the OME as well. How does it handle on the road? Which springs did you go with?

I don't know if 2 inches in the rear is too much for me. That is why I have been shying away from the OW setup.

Two inches in rear. Front's are adjustable from stock to 3". I'm running 3". Tire size is my signature- 265/70R17. Same tires in both those pictures.
 
2" in the back of your truck doesn't look too high at all. I was sure your tires were bigger as well. Thanks for the feedback!
 
FWIW, as I said I did the Bilsteins and OME (Medium) and the ride is better than stock. Granted it has 108k milesand I went to 33x11.50s (D), but it rides very well.
 
OME is not adjustable. if you dont want too much lift go for 895E in the rear, it should give you 1.5'' to 2'' of lift. it will match the softs up front perfect. if you plan on a winch bumper go medium up front and 895 in rear. if you get a winch then upgrade to the heavy in the front. dont use a heavy in the front if you dont have any extra weight up there as the ride will probably suck.
 
What will the OME setup give me up front, 3"? Maybe doing the OW 2.0 in the front with the OME 895E in the rear will give me what I want. Or maybe the SAW springs in the rear?

Or screw it and just get the OW 2.0 all around?
