Not sure why you'd need that part. Why don't you take the inside panel off to get the key mech? Aren't they held on with a clip?

That would be my thought as well. I could use the same part for a different reason.

I did take it off... Yes the center trim piece is held on by clips and one nut, but the key mechanism is held to that trim piece by very tiny brittle plastic... That's why my key mechanism fell inside my tail gate. I have searched all over and have come up short trying to find this trim piece, either painted or un-painted...

I would love to find one in the junkyard, but sadly here in the midwest at least in Iowa junked 4runners 3rd gen. I hate to have to go the stealership and have them charge me out the wazoo for this piece... I'm hoping part outs on here will help me out a lot. I agree with the painted ones, there are literally none out there.

Check your local craigslist too. I always see 3rd gens being parted out in my area.
