Need help! Fuel and spark = still no start!

Having a bit of trouble with my in laws truck. My mother inlaw drives a 99 4 runner and has been giving me nothing but hell. The car was running and suddenly just shut off while idling on the street. So I go through the basics spark fuel and both check out good. I checked spark by putting a screwdriver in one of the plug wires and grounded it, and got a nice blue spark. Check fuel by cracking loose one of the fuel rail lines and cranked the car and fuel sprayed. One thing I read if I crack open the rail it should have sprayed out but it just drizzled out, but once I cranked it it sprayed out. Timing belt is still intact and gears line up with there marks. I've also notice when the key is in the on position the check engine light will stay on but when I pull the codes there are none. I'm completly stumped if anyone has had any issues like this please chime in. The truck has 110k miles fuel filter has not been changed also not sure if I should start with that, I also don't want to go throwing parts at it and not get anywhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

CEL will stay on with the key on engine off. If it doesn't go out when started then you have a CEL. Unplug your MAF and see if it runs.
 
Clean the MAF with CNC MAF cleaner.

I would also check the idle air controller located (IAC) under the throttle body. Clean with carb cleaner. It may just be gunked up. Clean the throttle body at the same time.

Check all spark plug wires, relays under the hood, and grounds.

Lastly, manually turn the engine over. Sometimes these engines do throw a rod and bad things happen (even though I cannot remember this happening for some time). I highly doubt such though.
 
you should change your fuel filter just because its so old. def. worth while.
i wonder if it could be something off like a crank position sensor.

no back firing when its trying to start? what about when you put ur foot on the gas, will it almost start then?
 
Thanks for the quick replies everyone, when cranking it cranks just as a normal car would just no start. What I have notice is I let it sit for about two days not messing with it I go to try to start it and for a slight second it sounded like it was about to start then nothing. I have tried starter fluid and also does nothing. I will try to pull the Maf tomorrow and clean it. Again thanks everyone for the replies, at the moment the truck does belong to my inlaw but have a feeling it will be falling in my hands soon :-)
 
Had this with my Corolla...

This happened to me on Thurs. I had it towed home. Basically, you have to have 3 things: fuel, spark, air. I checked all fuses and mods. I pulled plug#1 and cranked: spark. I then pulled the air filter and MAF... I had air. (others have mentioned the crank position sensor or idle air controller??) I opened the gas tank and turned on the key, the pump should run for a few seconds then shut off. I couldn't hear the pump! I pumped the gas and cranked... no gas smell.... It WAS the fuel pump! $130 later, we're back on the road!
 
Unplugged the maf and it sounds very close to starting. Not sure if its safe to say that the maf is the culprit. The battery is pretty low since the truck has been sitting for a couple weeks. Not sure if I should go out and get a maf, what do you guys think?
 
something else you might look at is the CPS (Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Sensor). I had this problem on my Jeep and the CPS was the culprit. It was a pain to diagnose cause there was no trouble codes (damned OBD1). just something to check.
 
Good way to check to see if you crank sensor is the culprit is to get something that reads RPMs through the OBDII port. Not sure if a ultragauge or scangauge will do it but the snap on one at my work does. If you have no rpms displayed when cranking. Then the CPS is your problem.
 
Just got the truck to start cleaned out the iacv and maf, didn't want to start still gave her some starter fluid and she's back up and running. I'm almost positive that the maf is the issue the truck will stall out if I don't gas it right after cranking it. After it is running though it will idle on its own. Thanks everyone for all the help.
