Need help identifying noise.

My '95 V6 whines pretty severely at neutral and gears 1-3 while the engine is transferring power to the box, if I'm just rolling while in gear not touching the throttle it doesn't whine. If the clutch pedal is ever depressed, the whine also goes away.

I searched the forum and it sounded like one other guy had a similar problem but it was unresolved.

I've looked into several things and now I'm just at a loss, if its my tranny's deathcry how bad would it be to rebuild it if possible?

Sorry about the long post and thanks in advance for any tips or ideas.

Sounds a lot like either a throwout or pilot bearing. It's been a while since I've been inside a clutch but I'd lay money on one or the other or both.

I had that problem on mine (may have been my post you found), and fixed it with a new transmission. I believe that the problem was a bad input bearing in the transmission, which would mean replacing or rebuilding the transmission.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

That's where my suspicion was. I'm not very experienced but I'm very capable, how expensive and time consuming is a tranny rebuild? As long as I'm asking how much would a transmission cost? Doing all of the labor myself naturally.
