Need help installing Gentex auto-dimming mirror

Ok, I got my mirror and all the necessary wiring and gadgets but no directions. I did print out the Toyota Gentex installation instructions that someone posted on my prior post but I 1) don't know how to connect the wires to the red things that appears to be some type of fuse 2) which slot in the fuse box to put them in . I am trying to post pics and I will ASAP as they are too big right now. I am resizing them. I am installing this on an 05 4Runner SE. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I dont have a clue about installing the miiror, but those red things look like scotchlocks......if they are, they're used to splice into the wiring. lay the wires you want to connect side by side then close the connector. don't know how reliable they are, but when i installed the oem fog kit in my previous 02 sr5, the kit came with blue scotchlocks to tap into the harness.

Thanks for the reply. I just figured that out myself also. I am assuming that I have to tap into some wiring in the vehicel which is 12v that goes is on only when he ignition is on also. I thought that someone installed this putting a fuse on the end of it and then routing it to the fuse box. No? Anyone?

Ok, after doing much searching on this site it appears that I need to tie this wiring into the brown/red wire. I have taken apart the door sill and did find the rec/brown wire there but it is mostly wrapped up in black tubing. This tubing goes to all the wiring behind the cowel piece. Is this where I need to tie this wire into? Do I need to take some of the black tubing off to get to this wire or is there an easier way?

I installed one of these in the Camry a while back. Since you didn't get any installation instructions, try this link. I believe what you're looking for is the wire that is a switched 12V line; the other is for ground, which you will find in several places.

As far as taking off some of the wire loom, that is a judgement call. If you can't trace to an open area where you can get to the wire you want, then you may have no choice.

From the other posts that I have read it appears that I am looking for bigger of the two brown/red wires. I can see the brown/red wire half way down the door sill but I don't think my wiring is long enough to get me there. It then goes up right behind a box on the other side of the cowel cover.

There are already several threads here that show the factory specified points to tap for the mirror (with pictures). If you're in the right spot, you shouldn't need to peel back any loom. The wire you want is behind the driver side kick panel. There is a factory ground point/bolt back there too.

I have read about 10 threads today and have looked at a few pictures. I have found the ground with no problems. All the threads give the directions directly from Toyota but the pictures are very small in the diagrams. I did a search under "auto dimming mirror" and "install dimming mirror". I also downloaded a copy of the 2003 schematics of the wiring but that means nothing to me. I was hoping it would have pictures showing the wiring but I couldn't make heads or tails out of it. You have to remember not all of on this forum are masters in installing mods to our vehicles and many of us have no idea what we are doing. I don't need to splice into the wrong wire and screw the vehicle up. I am unsure what exact "pictures" you are speaking of. I did see one post where someone tapped into a yellow/red wire I believe but that didn't appear to be the correct wire. It worked but this isn't what the directions stated to do. Again, I don't want to screw this up. Can you confirm that the wire is red/brown? Where is the drivers side kick plate? Are you refering to the cowel cover? I did pull up my cowel cover, foot rest, and door sill earlier tonight looking for this wire but only found the groung and MANY little wires everywhere. I know nothing about wiring and electrics if you havn't noticed.

You can also try "Gentex" as the search word. It will help narrow the list for you.

I did that, and this thread has photos that may help you.

Thats the post that I was speaking of. If you read the thread, the guy that linked his mirror to the yellow/red wire didn't do it properly. Those are the only pictures that I have found. As I said, I found the ground with no problem but can't find the brown/red wire to link the mirror to.
