Need Help Lubrication The Drive Shafts!

In the manual is said
"Propeller shaft:
spiders and slide yokes
Lithium base chassis grease, NLGI No.2

Is that two different kind of grease on one??

NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) No. 2 is the Grade--like "API Service SL" for motor oil.

so you use Lithium base chassis grease, NLGI No.2 on all the nipple? I found a total of 6 all togeather on the front and rear drive shift.
Is that how many that are on their?

So TRD the 4th gen is very similar to the 3rd gen described in the write up. There are two types of grease one is normal lithium NGLI2 which goes into the U joints (if are 4wd you have 4 of them). The other grease is lithium moly (see write up for exact description) that goes into the slip yokes, you will have two if you are 4wd. The reason for the difference is that the slip yokes actually compress under driving conditions and the moly is supposed to help wth that or something to that effect, doesn't really matter alll the yota manuals specifies the two greases for the different purposes.

I just lube my u joint and slip yokes and now NO MORE CLUCK !!!!! I got 2 mini grease gun from advance auto for $7 each. and two 3 packs of lithium AP and moly grease for $3 a pack . thanks bulldog for showing me which grease goes where! :bouncy2:

Glad your clunk is fixed now, it is such an irretating thing. It is also a known issues, which is why I dont understand why dealers just dont do it on the first service as it will save their customers lots of aggrevasion.

No Luck

I did the lube of all slip joints, propeller shafts on my 2001 4Runner. Unfortunately it did not make any change in the clunking. How do you know if you have lubed the slip joint (yoke) with enough grease? I never did see it come out anywhere.

I gave mine grease till I could see the slip joint pushing out about 1-2 inches. I was concerned about the pressure on the shafts, so I opened the zerk and psuhed on the back to let some grease out again. Worked like a charm. I plan to repeat this every 10k miles, as it should. My driveline gets a workout once in a while so servicing it is probably needed.

So I should have seen the joint actually moving a couple of inches? I didn't notice any movement. I'll recheck it. Just out of curiousity how many pumps did it take to extend yours 1-2 inches? How much grease did you let back out?

I used a big grease gun, and it took a lot (cant remeber but a lot more than 10 maybe even more than 20). Igot a bit of grease out, but not that much. To be honest I cant remember.

Unfortunately the lubing did nothing for my clunking.
Apply brakes...come to a stop and keep foot on brake pedal......release pedal...THUMP
Anyone still have the same symptoms like I do even after lubricating?

My thud is comming from the front axle.. It also only thuds when i'm slowing down. Down hill or braking for traffic...For example when i'm going 50mph and sow down to 30 or 20mph.. Not when i come to a comlete stop... Is this the same issue??????
