Need help making a decision... 5th gen purchase.

To all- so here is my dilemma. I have been searching to purchase a 4Runner for the better part of a couple weeks. I was involved in an accident (not my fault) with my beloved 01 4Runner sr5 4x4 on Xmas eve and usaa totaled out my vehicle

I have come across a 2011 4Runner TE nav (black) w/106051 on the odometer. They are asking 24,000.00 for it. I was able to talk them down to 23,395 plus tax/tags. This vehicle has seen some highway miles and off-road use, but it has only been with one owner and has a solid mantinence record with Toyota. It has some dents/dings the dealer is wiling to fix as well to sweeten the deal. Is this a decent deal or should I continue searching?

**Btw they said they brought it in for 21,800 for a trade on a new 4unner.

Also what the dealer paid (or supposedly paid) makes no difference to you. If I paid 10$ for an apple doesn't mean that I can turn around and ask $12 and then tell people that Its worth it because i paid $10 and need to make a profit, if the market rate is 1$ the apple is worth 1$

I agree with both of you guys. It seems a little ridiculous but I'm not very familiar with the 5th gen market or the going rates for a trail edition.

100k is sort of a magic number in the used car market. Many dealers won't touch them once they approach that mileage.

Granted, it does not mean it won't run for 300k, but even on a 4runner the market value drops dramatically. Just check KBB... for a general range.

I would guess a fair retail price for that truck would be 17-20k. Trade in value is about 14-18k max. Just my opinion.

Just check what else is out there and if there isn't anything better its a gorgeous truck and I would be proud to drive it but if budget allows I would expect that some better deals could be had (maybe not though, your call)

In general when a car has a high resale value its not as good of a deal to buy used. That being said there are lots of people who want to drive a 4runner and can't/don't want to drop 34-44k.

A big question is do you do your own car work? I would hate to pay that price and then have to replace wheel bearings, brakes, etc at dealer prices (how are the tires?) You should have another 100k+ miles , I would expect them to be "trouble" free but I would expect to have to start replacing wear items like mentioned above.

Do your homework, if its something you still like try to work them down on price

So I did a KBB check for the 4runner in MY zip code and it came back $19,300-$24,000. That was assuming good condition and KDSS. One thing that you mentioned was it HAS been off road, if you know this because of scratches in the paint or things that the average consumer is going to notice that will drop the value as a lot of people are not interested in a truck that has been "used".....they think "Abuse".

Used Trails are like unicorns in this area. A used Trail for <28k is even rarer...

I wouldn't be shocked to see them sell that truck for ~23k. I'm not passing judgement on whether or not it's worth that much.

I'm not sure if this is a trail or not, but with the weak Canadian dollar right now you'd pay around $18,000 before haggling. It also only has 91,000 miles. Figured I post it just for fun.

Too expensive for a 100K miles T4R-Te in my opinion. I would ask to drive it off the lot for $20k inclusive of tax, tag and title tops. Tell him you are doing them a favor. The vehicle doesn't have running boards, The chrome tip is missing from the exhaust, it's clearly been used to tow stuff, thats extra wear and tear on the drive line, its probably been off road…….and 100k on any engine and drive train is half its life,…..( any negatives the longer the list the better to help reduce the price) Get under the vehicle grab the prop shaft and rotate and shake and see if it make a clunk….
Seriously I might go 21k off the lot

Saw a certified used 2012 Trail with 55k for $23.9 on Cars.com in my area last night. And several more with less than 100k miles at a similar price. Keep looking

I reall appreciate all the advice and info. Most of what has been said is stuff I have looked at and researched. I do work on my own cars and I'm very familiar with the ins and outs of preventative and upkeep maintenance. I just really want to get a trail edition but I'm not gonna sacrifice needless extra money just to obtain one.

It is crazy in my area (Hampton roads) the used car rates for any vehicle. I guess with the huge military population and individuals coming off the boat with money burning a hole in their pockets.....deals like this seem good on the surface, but it makes it hard for individuals to get a "fair" price on a ANY vehicle.

Sooooo.... If anyone is looking to sell their 4Runner TE..... Let me know! Lol I'm figuring im gonna have to travel to get a better price

Finding a used trail is hard due to the low production numbers. They don't make it to auction, hardly any are sold via Mannheim nationwide. Most are sold on the lot or via cars.com or autotrader. I never found more than a handful available when I was looking in 2013 and I had to buy new. Would gladly have saved the money on a used trail but it was not possible two model years ago.

What kind of suspension lift does this trail have? That is not the stock ride height. This could be a positive or negative.

There is no reason to be afraid of a 100k mile 4Runner, especially if you don't want to spend $40k. Only you can decide if it is worth it.

I noticed she has what appears to be a lift. It's not a budget spacer and the shocks are belistein...sp lol but the springs are black. The dealer couldn't tell me anything cuz they figured it was stock. I told them they were wrong and the vehicle had been lifted.

I'm not commenting on "should you or shouldn't you" - you have to decide that.

Two things I'd suggest:

- No matter what they say, I would not believe what they say they gave on trade. Besides, it's totally irrelevant to what you are willing to pay. It's a gimmick to get you to think you're near their cost, ergo "a good deal". BS.

- Since they took it on trade, they know who the PO is. If you do consider an offer, first insist on talking to the PO. That's the only way you'll know the truck's condition. They'll have 10 reasons why they can't. Me, I'd not even consider this 4R without that.

I wouldnt pay that for 100k miles but hopefully someone will buy mine for that or more in 5 years if I want a new one. Doughtful though. I run cars 200k if their upto it.
