Need Help on Audio Upgrade 4th Gen SR5 2008

Hi All,

I'm hoping to get some feedback and help with this project that I am undertaking.

I've done my research and searching on this forum and other websites, but nothing that has been really concrete and helpful, perhaps it could be that I am not searching for the right terms.

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Here is what I am trying to do: Upgrade stock 2008 SR5 stereo system. I do not think I have the JBL Audio System.

The equipment that I will be replacing with is:
Headunit: Pioneer F90BT
Steering Wheel Control: PAC SWI-PS

I will be doing the installation myself, so this is the part where I need people's experience & knowledge.

What else am I missing?

I was told that with the headunit I have I will need to buy an antenna adapter? Is this true? if so, what kind do i purchase? and where?

I was also told that if I wanted to use the existing factory amp I will need to purchase an addittional unit in order to get sound.

Can someone please help and point me in the right direction?

Most probably aren't going to reply because if you did a search you could find all the information you were looking for. This is a highly discussed topic in this forum, but since I'm up late and feel like taking a break from a 10 page paper, I'll help.

You don't need an antenna adapter.
You do need a dash kit (Metra 95-8202)
You do need a harness (Metra 70-1761)

If you do have the JBL, the kit and harness change to the 95-8210 and TYTO-01.

Some will suggest other brands like Scosche, American International, and Best Kits + Harnesses for your installation parts. I've had great luck with metra which is why I suggest them. You can get them online through Crutchfield, at your local shop or even Best Buy / Circuit City. Ebay if you like, but none of those parts are expensive except for the TYTO-01.

thank you very much. I did try searching and reading up on past posts, however, the information was not clear and easily searchable.

Since I am also new, can you suggests me on other websites or inks that can help me with my install?

i've gone to 12volt.com & caraudioinstalls.com and both hae been very helpful.

Once again, I appreciate your help and I do apologize if this is a redundant post.
 
There is a write up on here somewhere where a guy did a navigation install in his 4th gen 4runner. If you can find it, you'll be shown how to get the dash apart as well as some other tips. I actually think that Metra sends instructions with their dashkits now. As far as other websites, i just use Manufactures websites. When it comes to vehicle specific installation, there is no better place than forums like this. I doubt you'll find a custom shop that is going to post a writeup on how to install a navigation system in your car, specifically because that's what they make money on. Crutchfield is the exception because the majority of their business is online with just a couple traditional bricks & mortar stores. If you buy from Crutchfield they will send you specific instructions for your vehicle. The steering wheel controls will come with a couple charts to help with yours and will be the only tricky part of your install. They can be a PITA to program. I've done hundreds of them so to me they are simple, but I can remember when I despised installing them.
 
2008 head unit replacement

Would you let me know what you are going to do with your stock unit? I have a 2007 with the JBL speakers, but early model so I cannot hook up XM. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great! Thanks.
 
With the right harness and crimps the wiring is no problem (you can wire it up beforehand and everything is usually color codes to make it foolproof). Fit kits can be crap (Metra QC sucks, even for simple bits of plastic) but are easy to install. It's the tearing apart the dash and trying to cram all the new wiring into the space that is a PITA... straightforward but just time consuming. If you've never taken your dash apart before then allow 4-5 hours to install a new HU.

Don't worry about antenna adapter... just leave the smaller of the two plugs disconnected but do make sure you hook up the blue antenna power cable in the wiring harness.
