Need Help on Battery

This is just a quickie thread because my didn't really turn up much in what I was looking for.

12V Battery is dead on the 4Runner, looking to upgrade to a heavy duty battery that will eventually tie into a dual battery system.

I know Optima Red Tops have always been a good choice for most tuners, but I remember hearing about Odyssey Batteries that were pretty frickin' stout. Anyone have a part number for the Odyssey's and their experience vs. an Optima?

Trying to get a quote from my parts dept. the battery as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!

I was going to get that but went with the 34r-1500 since it was on sale, it can also be had with a metal jacket. ive tried many different batteries in my vec.s over the years & always end up going back to Odyssey. have you considered the diehard platinum marine 31m, its on sale at $232 & just fits.

Well, my battery wouldn't hold a charge after being on the charger most of the day at work, so I ended up grabbing a Toyota 84 Month 27F for now. I couldn't find anyone who carried a Odyssey PC1700 or a PC1700-MJT (Metal Jacket and Terminal) in stock.

Actually had one audio shop guy tell me the Odysseys are crap and I should get an Exide (I think it was) battery instead.

Please do post your input/suggestions on batteries still, I'm just shelving getting a top tier battery until I do my dual battery set-up; hopefully by the end of the year.
 
I just replaced my 6 year old Optima red top model 34r yesterday only because the voltage was starting to drop more than I liked after charging. It would only get up to 12.25 volts and drop to 12.1 volts after sitting a while so I knew it was going to die soon. It still started fine but just wanted to start with a fresh battery. I looked into an Oddessy locally but no one carried the reverse terminal model. I looked into Amazon and summit racing to order one but could not justify the price difference over the optima for my 11 year old 4runner. I finally called Autozone and asked for their best price on a Optima 34r. He said $182 and he had it in stock. I checked the date it was made (5/13) and checked its voltage before buying (12.5) so I knew it was fresh. I have found that the reversed terminal batteries run about $20 more than conventional batteries. If this Optima last as long as my old one I will be happy. The Optima I had in my Jeep lasted 7 years before it died. Both of these are in the middle of the Arizona desert where it can get up to 120 degrees. My first battery I got from Summit racing but it can be a hassle with warranty return if you mail order one. Luckily I did not have any problem with it. I have heard a lot of crap about bad Optima batteries over the years. I my observation a lot of Optimas are used in off road vehicles that seldom get used. People just let them set for months before using them again and never kept the battery charged. Then they like to get on the internet and complain about the dead battery. Keep them charged and in use and they are fine in my opinion. I did not consider the sears platinum one because I have no sears in town and two the do not appear to make reversed terminals unless you go with a marine deep cycle battery which I did not want.
 
I went with the Sears Platinum. Best specs I could find and good reviews.

The big odysea batteries are hard to find locally.. The Diehard Platinum is the best odysea produced option to be locally sourced.
 
After much research I replaced my OEM battery with an Odyssey PC1700MJT-A that I ordered through Odyssey online at noon on 9/16 and it was at my door by 10:30am on 9/20. I was able to wait for it to ship, if not I would probably have gone to Sears for the Diehard Platinum marine battery. I had to run out to get a different tie down, but I expected that. Since I haven't had it for a week I can't really say much other than its heavy and it works.
 
During my research last year Diehard Platinum is the same battery. I just could not justify the cost since I dont run anything special to warrent it. I bought a the biggest amp battery from Autozone that would fit.
 
I just got this month Consumer Reports and they happen to have a report on Batterie tests. The top two batteries in all sizes where the Walmart Everstart and the DieHard Platnium. Both were considered CR best buys in all sizes. The Everstart won most sizes but the Diehard took a few and was nearly always a runner up. Most likely the Everstart beat the Diehard as the price was 20 dollars less in all sizes.

Now I don't take CR info as end all be all but for the most part they do a decent job of rating things and hit most of the important tests.
 
Optima batteries are made by a different maker now, in Mexico. So they aren't as bad ass like we remember from 10 years ago.

Personally, I'd go with a Duralast Platinum because of the price, warranty, and higher reserve capacity. But some like to feel better having spent $300 on a battery. So I'm sure whatever you get you'll be happy with it.

I forgot that everything ever posted on a forum is always true. :shocked:

CR does something well but I never pay attention to there car tests or there reliablity charts of cars only a few years old. Like everything printed or posted now a days you always have to apply the commonsense filter.
