I am helping my sister to purchase a 2012 GX tomorrow. I don't know what is the good price to make an offer.

I researched the web and Lexus forums. There are so many differences on price. The best one I saw on the Lexus forums was $1500 over invoice. I never bought a car at dealer and ask to see the invoice before. Will the dealers show us the invoice? If they do, how do we know it is a "true/real" invoice.

Please let me know your best purchase price. I will check the forum tomorrow before heading to the dealer.

Thank you,

Couldn't you find the invoice by going to KBB.com or EDMUNDS.com??

Lexus vehicles around here don't have much "dealer add-ons" other than maybe window tint. So, by going to the internet sites, you should get a pretty good idea of the invoice. What you can do is look up MSRP and invoice. By knowing the difference, you have an idea of the markup.

For example, Lexus XXXX has invoice of $35,000 and MSRP of $38,000 on the internet. The difference/markup is $3000. If you go to the Lexus dealer and Lexus XXXX with some dealer add-ons is listed at $39,000. You can make a rough estimate that invoice would be around $36,000, given that the add-ons are worth more than a few pennies. From that knowledge, you can start the haggling at $35,000 or $35,500...and go from there. (Or as you wrote, most people get $1500 over invoice, then you may want to offer $36,500 as a starting point.)

Good luck.

We got the car. I hate to haggle so I offered $1500 over invoice and the guy took the offer without hesitation.

Dealers may pay an invoice price and have an invoice to show you but that is often inflated, and not the true price the dealer will have ultimately pay for the car. At the end of the season or year, the manufacturer may have give backs or returns to dealers. So this 35000$ car invoice, may sell for 38000 MRSP but at the end of the day paying 36500 for the car is more than 1500$ profit if they stand to get a return from the manufacturer of another 1500$ for example.

If you show up a the dealer with the 35000$ in your pocket so to speak, and you know which car you want, and are ready to spend that cash, and you think invoice is 35000$ offer that. Even 34000$, all they can say is no. You say that you are going to sign right there and then, for 34000$ or 35000$. That technique works. These guys want to sell. Not meet the same guy 15 times, to look at the same car so that they can sell it for 500$ more. It a waste of time, not to mention those guys who got away or went to someone else while he was entertaining your 15th visit.

I got my wifes car under the magical mystical supposed "invoice" doing this. Told the sales guys what we wanted, and were signing within the hour. Only cause we flip flopped on the color.
