I have a 1998 4runner (2.7L 4cyl) distributorless ignition.
This problem has been occurring off and on for 1-2 years. I havnt been driving it for the duration. I am at a point now where want to fix it to sell it. It all started with stumbling and hesitation when accelerating, it would also backfire/misfire. Originally it gave me codes p0340 cam pos sensor, p1300, p1310. Initially I changed the cam pos sensor and spark plugs which didn't make a difference. Coils and wires were replaced next which made a improvement but still ran rough. Replacing the coils got rid of the p1300 and p1310 codes but p0340 still remained. I brought it to a shop and they put new sPark plugs in again and it ran great for about three weeks then it started to stumble hesitate etc again. The p0340 never went away. A Spanish on about 6months went by, I brought it to a shop again and they changed the plugs again and it ran great for about 3 weeks or so. This time I noticed that it would cut out while driving and it would stall occasionally at stop light. These symptoms got worse and started to stall while driving. Next thing I knew it would stall within a min after starting and it would be difficult to start again, would have to wait a minute. I checked the spark plugs again and they were black with carbon and wet fouled with fuel. Plugs were only 4 weeks old. Eventually it wouldn't even start anymore. I changed to plugs again and still won't start. This has been a nightmare. Any suggestions?
