need help please

I have a 1998 4runner limited 2wd. today I went to start it and it turned over 1 time and on the 2nd turn it made a sound allmost like I had let off the key and put it back on. now it sounds differant like it is not firing or it has lost comprssion. I checked the timing belt and it is not broken and my buddy said it is turning when you turn the motor over. I realy need some addvise on this.
