Need help! Should I buy it?

I live in the northeast (Mass) and it's a 2007 4Runner SR5, no bells and whistles really, for $17,858. It has 84,454 miles on it. It's a 4X4 with the V6 4.0L. Has running boards, tow package and that's pretty much it.

Is it worth it? Good price? Anything to look out for? How much can I expect mileage wise out of this thing if I'm spending almost 18K?

Carfax says no accidents or anything.

seems a little high to me. whats the frame look like? id probably want to pay closer to 15 for that
 
Frame looks good. No rust that I can see. I'm not that knowledgable on what to look for though. This 4Runner is at a dealer that does "Smart" pricing which means I can't negotiate. I'm seeing it's roughly 800 bucks overpriced.
 
I would think closer to $16k is more reasonable, but I'm sure you've done your pricing research.

Have you seen the sticky thread that lists all the pre-purchase checks? Definitely make sure the 4X4 switch actually works.

What do you mean about "what kind of mileage should I expect?" Are you asking about MPG or lifespan?


For reference, I picked up mine in July with 98k mi (details in sig) for $17.1k. After I saw the thread that lists what people have paid, I feel good.

The $17,858 price tag does seem a bit high, but I can't negotiate and this vehicle is tough to find around here. Prices seem to be inflated here in the northeast. They hold their value so well too.

For the mileage comment I was referring to longevity. I hesitate to buy a car with 85,000 miles on it, but it is a toyota. I hate repair bills!
 
I just bought an '06 Sport Edition with 85k miles for $15,500. It's immaculate and a California car so ZERO rust or anything. Mine is a 2WD, not 4WD, but I would not think that would be worth $2k more.

I bought mine, without hesitation, based on having three friends that are in the high 100,000's (185, 175 and 190) and all of them have done nothing but change the fluids and replace tires. I also have a friend who owns a local repair shop. He has a few customers with over 300k miles on their 4Runners (although I'm not sure if they're 4th Gen or what).

85,000 miles is nothing for a PROPERLY maintained toyota.

If you are willing to pay close to 20 grand for a truck, I would strongly recommend looking south. You could get a completely rust free truck in Georgia and spend a weekend driving it back to MA and probably get more for less. 4x4s don't sell as well done south.

I was told by a dealer that they would not accept 14,600$ on a truck and they had "no room to move".
A broker here in town got the exact same dealer with the exact same truck to 13,500$ and based on the feedback he was getting he believed they still had another 500$ they could work with.
I passed on the truck for different reasons, but a dealership saying "we can't negotiate" is calling your bluff. If they won't work with you, walk away, someone else will.

You absolutely can negotiate that price! If they won't budge, tell them you'll find someone that's willing to negotiate. Don't let them BS you on that "smart price" scam. That's just an easy out for them. They have plenty of mark up on that truck. It's definitely priced high with no options though. Sounds like a $15k truck to me.

Who cares if they have "smart" pricing. What do you have to lose by offering $16.5k? Just walk in there and say "I'm ready to buy right this minute, but I will not pay a dime over $16.5k!". Then, if they say "no", tell them it's their loss and walk out the door. Then watch them scramble. I love screwing with the dealers.
 
If it were me. Id pay less than half of that. With double the miles. O wait i did do that.

Anyhow seems high. For dealer it should be around 15k. Private should be about 13k.
