Need help! Transfer case and transmission woes

For any future searchers. It seems the tcase from the 3.4 5speed transmission is unique to that setup. So when finding a donor, it has to come from the same 3.4 5speed setup.

Do you know what is different about the 5-speed t-case vs the auto (standard j-shift) t-case? My understanding is that they are the same. The shift lever is different, but that's about it, from the looks of it.

And yes, the Hilux Surfs often (always?) came with full-time or multi-mode cases. I wonder if it has the open center diff or the torsen center diff like the manual transmission FJ Cruisers got...

Prior to the torsens I believe they were just viscous couplings.

No 3rd gen Hilux Surf that I have ever owned or seen has fulltime 4wd, they either have an I type shifter or a J type.
The I types stay in 4H when in 2wd and are only engaged by the button on the side of the shifter.
The J types you seem familiar with already. But the J types have a selectable fulltime 4wd mode (shifter in 2H position and side button pressed.

Now there are plenty of Toyota vans and such over here that use the same tranny and similar transfer case, some are electric and others may have a different shifter pattern altogether.
