Need HELP with a speaker install! Anyone with a 98ish LIMITED??

I just popped my front door panel off no problem, only to find that the 6 1/2 speakers are totally epoxyed to a big plastic mount. The 4 screws holding it to the mount are doing nothing, it's a damn good epoxy job!

Anyone that has replaced theirs already, what did you do? Is it possible to pry the speaker out of there, without breaking the plastic mount that is screwed to the door? It's got all the door wiring, nicely harnassed to this plastic mount, so I don't want to have to ditch it!

epoxy? sounds like a homemade job to me. but i could be wrong.

edit: apparently i was wrong. thats crazy.

the 1996-2002 speakers in the BASE??? and SR5?? are the same.

It is strongly glued from the factory, yes. You just gotta pry that sucker out, then mount your new speakers. I needed a spacer to fit mine.

It's a '98 LIMITED and there was only 1 owner before me. These are the stock speakers for SURE. Serious air tight epoxy, all the way around! Going to PRY right now...

yeah i got in between with a razor blade, made it big enough to fit a flathead, turn and pry :)

Yep, I just used a razor blade and cut the seal 1/4 of the way around and just yanked it off!

But now the infinity reference 6 1/2 's are a little bit smaller around, the screw holes don't match up at all. The metal spacers that came with them are too small around to match the holes either! Where's a good place to get the correct size spacers quick? I'm guessing I have to go to a stereo install place and beg?

I had to make my own. You'll likely have to go to a stereo shop.
 
I'll look up which shops sell infinity speakers, they should have the spacers laying around. I already soldered the new speaker in, so I just put in the top screw and all that residual epoxy is holding it in there TIGHT! HAHA I'll just leave it like that and go find spacers. Thanks, this forum ROCKS!
