Need help with a tire decision!

Well out of the blue today my girlfriend said she thinks I need more aggressive tires! Normally she makes fun of half the things I've put on the 4runner. Apparently she saw a truck today that changed her mind. That's a good enough reason for me!

The problem is I'm torn. Currently I've got 265/70 terra grapplers with an FJ/Day Star setup. I've been wanting something a little more aggressive lately.

My current 2 choices are 275/70/17 Wrangler MT/Rs or 285/70/17 Wrangler Duratracs. Performance wise both tires seem to get good reveiws, both look good in my opinion, and both are the same price.

Are the 285s going to look too big with my setup? Is the little bit of difference really a big deal? I realize either will require a little trimming and both will probably destroy the terrible gas mileage i already get. I'm fine with that (kinda). I just don't want to spend a grand and not be happy with the change.

Which of these tires would you choose?

I see a lot of people going for the 285/70/17 Wrangler Duratracs. They look great my question is why not get the 285/70/17 Nitto Trail Grapplers M/T

I like the duratracs, but for the money i would prolly go with TSR's if I did it again, Ive got 285/75r16 Dakota MT's on my runner with the same setup you have, search my posts for pics, I don't have any pics of it with the FJ suspension yet though.

I'd get a real lift if I were you.......lol.
I say get the duratracs and get it over with. Then you'll be forcing me to get new tires too. 285's will look fine.

Oh and btw I saw your license plate on another car today.....weird huh??

285 Duratracs are gorgeous & I haven't read anything bad about them.

I would probably go w/ 275s because I "think" you can have a matching spare to fit underneath. But maybe not the MT/R

(It all depends on the Tire Tread Design because of the size)

G.I.G. has 285 GYSA w/ the V8 hitch & he was able to fit a matching spare down underneath.

I love the Trail Grapplers. Im trying to buy local though since Im impatient and most places will price match anyway. Around here they are much harder to find, and the places that do have them are pretty proud ($$). Im also leaning towards what Sears is able to get since I have a friend that will pick them up with his employee discount.

Zstampe- Your opinion doesnt count.

KC-Thats a good point about the 275 tire fitting underneath, but you lost me after saying the Duratracs are gorgeous haha. Im leaning that way heavily after sleeping on it.

Presta-Im going to search for some of your pics now. I had never seen the Kelly Safari TSRs until you just mentioned them. Ill have to check those out.

Thanks for the replies so far (except for the dude that posted the Obama sticker)

You can't go wrong with any of those. Check with ToyotaTrailTeam on here. He just purchased the Goodyear MTR's in 315/70/17 but I am sure he can give you insight into those. I personally like the Kelly Safari TSR's or the Duratracs. They are both made my GY and the Kelly's would be a little bit cheaper.

so you guys think it will be a toss up regarding the size? Someone on this forum gave me a complex after saying the 275s would look much better with my lift. Should the half inch difference really sway me one way or another?

I've got a 3.5 lift, and the 285s still
rub sometimes when I hit bumps while turning even after all the trimming I did. I have spidertraxx
too. I think you need to get a real lift of you want to clear 285s.

Lol disregard the Obama sticker. Is was the teabag thing (not the political movement, more so I was talking about man-balls) that struck me as something you'd like.

Who said the 275's thing? Me? I was probably drunk. 285's will be fine.

The MTRs are a better off road tire and have a much better sidewall. They will probably me nosier. If off-road performance is your goal go MTRs. The duratracs are a good tire (still good off road) but are less aggressive and have a weaker side wall.
Neither would be a bad choice.

Yes it was you that said it haha. Im going 285s.

I cant imagine what you were looking at on the internet to come across that license plate....

see my sig. Safari TSR's FTW! They're wearing great and more agressive than the duratracs, while being so quiet! I love em so far.

What about Toyo Open Country MT? They look nice, ride well and seem good quality, anyone take them offload?

Those were definitely on my list, but even more expensive.

I know this thread only lasted a day, but the few opinions I got on the Duratracs confirmed what I was already thinking. I ordered the 285/70/17 Duratracs and hope to have them by this weekend :)

Thats probably the most Ive spent on a random purchase in a long time. Ive been wanting to go a little bigger for a while now, but the girlfriends comment gave me a good reason to do it.

I **** you not, she said I need more lift today too, after staring at my truck. That will definitely have to wait. Not sure what has gotten into her, and dont know if I should like it or not!

I would go with the Duratracs unless you have money to burn... those MT/Rs wear a lot quicker. They're worth it if you need them for off roading but the Duratracs will be better unless you spend a lot of time in the dirt.

Thanks a lot Zach I have wasted at least 2 hours looking at this thread, good find.

lol you're welcome Matt, that sight has some crazy funny stuff on it.

Wait till she see's mine with my new lift!!!! You could always do a 1" body lift for cheap.

Im not buying a lift anytime soon lol. Im happy with where its at for now. This thing gets ragged out as it is, the more I do to it, the more it costs me in the long run. Already have 3 trips planned in the next few months.

I wouldnt mind a body lift though...
