Need help with cleaning/replacing ERG valve on 99 4 cyl 4Runner

My 99 4Runner with the 4 cyl engine started showing the check engine light. Had someone hook up a diagnosis tool and he retrieved a code that indicated the EGR Valve is the culprit.

He said the valve probably just needs cleaning or possibly replacing.

Is this a difficult job or is it something that most mechanically proficient people could easily tackle? Any tips or advise from someone who has done this?

It's not overly difficult to clean, the biggest issue may be rusty fasteners.

Remove it from the back of the intake, save the metal gasket, it can be re used. Check inside around the valve, it should be carboned up and black, but if there is lots of buildup on or around the valve you should clean/chip it off.

Take a photo when you get it off and I could tell you how bad it is.

If the diaphragm is torn inside there that activates it, you will need a new valve.
