I still have the JBL for sale out of our '03. It is a 6 CD version with cassette.

I agree that it sounds like you have a jammed CD.
Take the unit out nd remove the outer-housing cover.
I replaced my 03's stock non-JBL with a Scion T1808 w/ IPOD control cable. I recommend that simple mod to ANYONE who doesnt have it.

Jim, here is a thread that I posted recently. The link in the first box has the step by step procedure with pictures on how to remove the unit. Just print it out and take it outside with you and follow the instructions.

You cannot use, as far as I know, a JBL in a vehicle that came with a NON JBL without some modding. The JBL system has more speaks and has a in vehicle SUB that the non did not. That radio needs those to work I believe.
That said. You can use any aftermarket you want. Those of us that have the JBL system cannot just throw a aftermarket in and use all our speakers. We have to purchase an adaptor.
So. If your cd unit is fried and you don't have the JBL system, then I would look for a nice aftermarket head unit by pioneer or kenwood.

As for running the a JBL head unit with non-jbl speakers and sub, that is a really good question. I honestly have no idea.

JBL is such a good setup in part because they take into account almost every variable. As such, their systems are calibrated to specific headunits, speakers and amps.
While I have no doubt you could physically wire up the unit manually, I have no idea how the JBL headunit will run the non jbl speakers and sub. Make sense.
You may just have to try and see, and not be too pissed if it doesn't work well.
In your case, I suggest a NON jbl headunit as it will likley play nicer.

Actually, what I was trying to say, is you with every post you kept amending or changing the facts, which altered the answer.
My point was, full disclosure upfront saves time. At first it was, CD STUCK. Then it was, will a JBL work? Then it was, I have aftermarket equipment already installed.
Each one of those are different things and give different responses.
So. Yes. You told a convoluted "story" with new variables being introduced.
As for the JBL with the AMP, yea; wire it up. I am sure it will "work", how well depends. Like I said earlier, JBL headunits are designed and tested around specific conditions.
I dont really see how i changed the story. The cd IS stuck. Sooo, if the radio is screwed, will the JBL work as a replacement?

These instructions are for taking out the navigation system which I don't have. I was just wanting to replace the stereo system head unit and I do have the JBL system. Really I just want a jack to play the MP3 player.

Dude, did you look at those steps? The NAV systems and the non JBL and the JBL radio all go in the same location in the 4runner. It's the same way to get to the radio for all 4th gens.

have you tried doing a master reset?
Unplug battery- let it sit- then plug it in after about 5 mins. Try it!
