i have 97 2wd 4runner with an automatic 3.4 lit engine. i have 31x10.5 15s on it now soon to be putting on a ome lift. when tires run out i was looking at 33x10.5 15s cause i want to keep my rims and i think 15" tires are cheaper than 16s(and i would also have to buy new rims, don't want that). i don't understand gear ratio at all. been researching around and getting info that says when you increase tire size you should change gears. i drive 98% onroad with an occasional camping trip with the family. so would i even have to change gears? hopefully not cause it seems expensive. i don't need to change anything for offroad performance just want to maintain my onroad ability i have now. any help would be great. thanks

You'll lose power when you go from 31s to 33s. Gears will bring your power back. I got my gears mainly for on road. They're great off road too, but I got them because I was sick of bogging down on the hills on the hwy.

R15 tires only go on 15" rims, 16s w/ 16 so stick w/ your 15s.

You don't need to get gears. It's up to you if you can live with the power loss, but if you want to maintain your on road ability, you'll probably want them. Since you're 2wd, the price will be 1/2 of what I paid (no front diff). About $3-350 for gears and the master bearing kit and maybe a 1/2 day labor.
