I need help finding a used rear bumper from a 1984-1989 4runner. I have this vehicle in Utah in slc and cant get it to pass the safety inspection without it. I have been able to find a new replacement bumper for $80 but it doesnt come with the mounting brackets to mount it to the vehicle. I spoke to the local toyota dealership to get the brackets and they want almost $300 for both of the brackets.

Im hoping someone on here has an old one left over after putting an aftermarket bumper on.

Please give me a call if you know where I can get one.

Thanks,
Patrick

I can't help you with brackets but you could try to find a local metal fabricator, they could make you a couple of brackets quickly and probably not too much money. The factory bumper mounts to the body but you could have brackets made that mount to the frame, there are already holes to bolt it to . Would a tow bar pass as a bumper for the safety? If so then that might be an option. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. That is definately an option.
I live in kentucky and keep this vehicle at my sister in laws house to take on camping and hunting trips so Im not there anymore so I'm hoping to find one I can get mailed there and put on when I go back out in mid august. I called every salvage yard out there and came up short. I found a couple of mid 80's 4runners in pick-n-pull yards but their bumpers were either damged beyond use or were already gone. I had a salvage yard here in ky tell me I'm not going to find one. Im starting to think he is right and having the brackets fabricated is the path Im going to have to take.

Still looking though.
Thanks

I can't believe you are having that much trouble finding a used bumper, I know of at least a few around here (not meaning to rub it in) that are available. Maybe there is someone on the board that is local to you that would lend you their bumper just for the safety. How about it guys. who's going to step up and help out a fellow first gen owner.:help:
If they only knew how flimsy the stock bumper is they wouldn't worry about it..
Good luck

I have been thinking the same thing about the strength of this bumper. These guys are just looking to check the box on their form to pass it.

Thanks for your help. If I stick with it I will eventually find one.

Found one!!! Took hours of searching for this bumper but finally came up with one in a round about way. I found a few on craigslist just by going through each city for every state but nobody was very interested in going through the hassle of shipping a bumper. I found a guy in Denver who had a mint bumper for sale but did not want to ship it. I was bummed but he called me back today and gave me a number for a toyota truck and suv salvage yard in Denver. I called them up and they had multiple bumpers ready to ship. I talked to this guy for a few minutes and found that he had all kinds of toyota parts for sale. Any way here is the guys website if you are having a hard time finding something local. He has no problem shipping items. I wish this guys info was on here earlier, it would have saved me a ton of time. I hope it helps somebody on here.
