Hello. I have a 3rd Gen SR5 4wd with 97K miles and Goodyear Silent Armors. I checked the pressure and fronts were at 35 and rear around 38. I thought I should air them down to 32 so I did. Drove it today on the hwy and steering wheel was shaking like crazy from 65-70ish. What should I put them at? 40? It had a very SLIGHT vibe at 70 before I messed with it. Thanks!

Bought it at a Toyota dealer in town. I mentioned the shimmy and they balanced them before I picked it up. Still a little shimmy at 70 so I have an appt monday for them to take care of it. I can tell they only balanced the front tires and not rear. Im just wondering why it got WORSE taking air out? Well, it goes in to the dealer Monday. Will advise if a balance cured it.
Ugh. Well, they Road Force balanced them at the Toyota dealer last monday. Noticed a SLIGHT shimmy every now and then on hwy after but was acceptable and happy. Today, seven days later, I get on the hwy and the wheel is shimmying again at highway speeds and seem to also feel it in floor and seat. One of these tires was "repaired" before I bought it and just wondering if a bad tire is causing this. I didnt hit any pothole or anything to make it magicly go out of wack. The only variable I noticed was it was a lot colder since last week. Im not about to spend $800 on a set of tires on a hunch. I will be bringing it back in I guess! Not happy. I asked when they did the RF if the suspension and driveshaft were good and he said the tech checked everythiong out and it all looked good.

highway speed shimmy not uncommon
many variables affect the steering wheel feel at highway speeds.
One thing I would have checked is the front end alignment. Have your alignment tech explain some of the components affecting your feel behind the wheel. They may spot something your dealer has not.
Tie rods are one such component. They do wear over time and may need replaced. Mine did....
Steering rack is another. A somewhat trouble prone area on the 3rd gens. Energy Suspension poly bushings for the rack are one thing that some of us have tried to cushion some of that excess "play". But if your rack has some extra play you may feel it on certain road surfaces and not on others. Mine bothers me from time to time but then at others it seems just fine.
Yet others will insist only use stock replacement rubber rack bushings, and same for sway bar bushings.
Yes even one repaired tire if up front- could be a small factor. So put that repaired tire on the back and see if anything changes. Get some use out of your spare if properly sized. Just another thing to compare....
Lower air pressure means slightly more rubber is now meeting the road. If you liked 35 psi before why not simply try 35 again? 32psi last week might be closer to 30 this week with lower temps you mentioned.I would try 35 psi all around and see how that goes for a week or 6.
It is smart you are thinking all this out before spending big money on new tires.Perhaps you keep them rotated regularly and check tire pressures frequently. You should-but many of us don't...
I like 38psi at all 4 corners-but that is me on my LT265/75/16 load range D Nitto Terra Grappler tires and you can probably find 10 people to argue the pros/cons of any variety of tire pressures.
Light Truck or P series tires each have a slightly different feel as well. C, D. or E load rated each just slightly different as well.
And we have not even yet mentioned your front suspension- springs and shocks. Perhaps this only occurs on the one side or the other...
Lots of variables....so many road surfaces and speeds....
If your Runner is a "truck" and used off road at all-these things are all relative. If you are looking for a pavement only and flawless ride then a P series tire with cushier ride is perhaps what you seek and the Silent Armors may not be the perfect choice for that application.
