I am confused by this...FT4wd is on all the time...power to both axles all the time. IMO, this is SUPERIOR to on-demand AWD. On-demand AWD has to WAIT for slippage before it intervenes...and there is usually a lag time. FT4wd is PRO-active in a sense because if slip does happen on an axle/wheel, power is ALREADY going to the other axle...no wait time.
With on-demand AWD, you HAVE to rely on VSA and TRAC while the AWD system reacts. With FT4wd, VSA and TRAC are ADDITIONAL tools to help out.
This is why when i shop for vehicles, FULL-TIME AWD is always preferred over the on-demand AWD. My Subaru is full-time AWD (90% front / 10% rear all the time; changes ratio if slippage occurs). My MDX is full-time AWD.
This kinda reflects the debate b/w ATRAC and lockers off-road. ATRAC is reactionary...you have to slip before it reacts. Lockers ALREADY provide power to both wheels even before slippage occurs...they are PRO-active.
Yes, on the highway, VSC and TRAC are key. However, having more than ONE wheel traction (as in FULL-time 4wd/AWD) is better than having ONE or none at the instant of slippage.
On a part-time 4wd system like 4runner...if the rear wheel (pick one) slips, then you're relying 100% on VSC and TRAC to bail you out (since front axle is useless)...again, they are reactionary and there is a lag time before it intervenes.
On a FULL-time 4wd like 4runner Limited...if the rear wheel (pick one) slips, then you STILL have the front axle providing traction and direction...and THEN you have VSC and TRAC to help out.
take a deep breath Thai lol. I didn't say AWD was better than FT4WD. As a matter of fact FT 4WD is better than AWD in the slick stuff. Now efficiency wise AWD is better but I digress. What I said was FT4WD is already giving you the best it can so if you start sliding VSC and TRAC will keep you pointing in the right direction. Go in that same corner in an AWD vehicle you wait until AWD kicks in first followed by VSC and TRAC. In my part time 4WD if I am in 2WD I just get the VSC and TRAC until I shift into 4WD. If I am proactive I would have shifted into 4WD before that corner lol.
My whole point is VSC and TRAC keep you out of the ditch and pointing in the right direction, not any 4WD or AWD systems.
Actually the most important thing is having good tires no matter what you are driving.
