Need input on Tires

My first thread on T4R, this site is flippin fantastic, i'm glad to be apart of the community.
I'm needing new tires and in a bit of a bind. I just bought a 97 Limited 4x4 2 weeks ago and it has unmatched 265-75-16s. Fronts are some off-brand never heard of and backs are BFGs. They've got months more of wear left but I'd like to replace them in the near future. In efforts of getting a few more mpg and the speedometer being more accurate I'm leaning towards going with the 265-70-16. I mostly drive hwy/interstate but pull a SeaDoo in the summer. Tires are expensive and just wanted to get some feedback from you guys on what tires you are using and recommend for someone in my shoes. I absolutely LOVE my green 4runner, so much fun to drive!! :frog::gun6::frog:
As of now I'm leaning towards the Uniroyal Liberators. $120 a tire, and I can probably buy 3 get 1 free. Whatcha think?

I can't comment on the tires you mention, I am more interested in off road tires, but regarding the tire size I think if you do lots of interstate driving then stay with the 265/75's. They will give you better mileage performance. Also when I switched up from 70's to 75's my speedo became more accurate! Now the gauge reading matches my gps and those speed radar trailers that the police leave on the side of the road.

Did your 4runner come with 265-70s? That's the stock size for 4x4 limited from what I've read. Maybe mine has been calibrated for the stock size. My guage seems fast, at least 5 mph off at 60 but I haven't seen a radar yet to check it. I guess there's mixed logics about better mpg and bigger tires. Can you link something that backs up getting better mpg with a bigger tire on same wheel?

I found a deal on Nitto Terra Grapplers a few years back and have been pretty happy with them. They are quiet on the road, but also perform well off road.

A friend of mine who borrows my rig is less than accurate with parking, and they have held up wonderfully with her parking by braille, or rock rash from me.

I think I paid just over $400 for 285/75/r16s, for a point of reference.

Living in Portland, it rains pretty much every day at least once. They do ok in the rain. Not great. Every once in a while if I accelerate too much into a right turn, I can feel a very slight spin out of the back end. I just blame it on torque though.

Welcome to the forum, there is a wealth of knowledge here. Let me be the first, and probably not the last, to say try the "search" feature. There is a good chance any tire you might want has been covered extensively, or at least one member will have, or has had it.:roadkill:

Man I would love to spend less than $400 before mount/balance align if needed. Thanks for the input. Sams/Costco/WallyWorld don't even carry a Nitto tire here in Nashville, crazy!

ya dude most late model 3rd gens came with 265/70/16 tires and u can get nittos at discount tires... patsawasy: thts crazy bc i was looking for tires two weeks ago and the cheapest nittos i could find were $670 shipping included for 285/75/16s on ebay.

They may or may not have fallen off of a truck. I bought them in an industrial complex in L.A. and had heard about them on CL and the shop was a glorified warehouse with no signs on the front. The tires were brand new and they mounted and balanced with it. No questions asked.

I ride BFG and love 'em, found them on craigslist w/5000 miles bought them for 600 w/wheels sold the wheels for 100 and my old set for 325 so I spent 175 on a set of nearly new 285/75/16's which would have run me 215/tire.

I would also call around to smaller tire shops and ask for a matched set the size you want, there are a lot of people who buy new tires and let the shops keep their nearly new tires.

Yeah i agree with DrinkinMolson..i have BFG at's and i love them. When i go muddin i like to see how far i can get with out throwing it in 4wd. And there quiet on the road or i just dont notice cuz i listen to my music load
