Need More Leg Room

I'm 5' 10" and driving a 2000 Limited. While driving, my left leg leans against the part fo the door panel that the power windows/doorlocks is mounted in. It sticks out about 2 inches, then transitions at a right angle to the flat surface where the buttons are located. It is that right angle that rubs into my leg and very irritating. Anyone know of custom door panels? I'd like to relocate the controls and get an extra 2 " or so of room.

Thanks!

whoa...im 5'10" as well, and i thought i was the only one that was ever bothered by the door. my whole leg from ankle to knee always rests and rubs against the door and yea it does get annoying. its bothersome to have to shift my leg around often to just not have the door touching me. i never thought about having the doors redone, but if you find anything out about that, make sure to post it, im sure there are others out there that would like to hear more about this topic.

I'm 6' and I've never been bothered by this. I am kind of skinny, though. Maybe you guys need to hit the treadmill? :biggrin2: j/k.

But seriously, I can guarantee that there are no "aftermarket" doors being made for 3rd Gen 4Runners. Custom work will be the only way, which means a lot of $$$$, which means you will have to live with it. :p

between 5'11" and 6' and yea my leg touches the door but I'm struggling to think of a vehicle I've owned that it doesn't, you fellas may be hard pressed to find a car you can sit Indian style in without touching some kinda panel

The problem with these doors is that (depending on how you position your leg) your leg hits and rubs against the right angle edge on the door panel which gets very annoying and begins to hurt over time.

My 93 Corsica that I commute back and forth to work in has more leg room that the 4Runner, and my left leg does not hit the door panel. This is the only car I ever had this trouble with and been so uncomfortable driving, especially long distances. I really like the truck with the exception of this problem and the small fuel tank that requires frequent stops (18.5 gallons, what is up with that?)

Anyway, I was just throwing it out there to see if anyone experienced the same problem and if there were any solutions.

I'd have to agree with p nut here, I'm also 6' and I have never had that problem. It could be the way that you are sitting, I am a security guard on a federal instalation and I see on a daily basis people who lean far back and can't see over the steering wheel. Try sitting up straight when you drive, thats what I do.

Building your own will be the only way to go... Seems like a foolish request... I wish mine came with about 5 more inches, a V8, 38's, a solid front axle, and more off road protection... you can't have it all...

Seems like a foolish request??? Making a request on this 4Runner forum to see if people are having the same problem and if there are any solutions is foolish and trying to "have it all"???

Are you kidding me???

The seats are kinda low to the floor, so maybe if you build some kind of brackets to raise them up an inch or so, it will give you more leg room and help straighten our your leg to avoid leaning on the door.

Did that make any sense at all?

Thanks, that does make sense and worth a try.

I read somehere else someone raised the seats and it made sitting more comfortable.

Its funny that you would want to raise the seats. Being tall and having a sunroof is not all that good when sitting upright. I am planning on actually lowering and putting the seat back with a little angle so it cradles you more. That way your legs are relaxed more.
The seats are bloody uncomortable, especially the lumber support being so low. I think it was designed for short women..
Thought of swapping the seats from a Camry, but I have leather, so I am limited in choice.

I find the 4Runner's footroom is not so deep.. but long. If you stretch your leg out straight (bend your knee as little as possible), I'm willing to bet your leg won't touch the door.

No, what I meant was to raise the front of the seats only, not the rear. That will give you more thigh support and straighten out your legs without putting your head closer to the roof.

I raised the front of my seats with a homemade bracket, but I have a 4th gen. You third gen guys can just use a spacer, if I remember correctly.

wow.. 5'10", that must be comfortable..

I'm 6'5" - I'm used to being cramped and uncomfortable in cars.

I'm 5'5"... I'll trade some one my legs for theirs! hehe, just kidding!

I hope you all find a way to fix your runners. yeh, lifting the front of the seat sounds like a good way to go.

Good Luck to you tall people!

I'm 6'4" and have as much, if not slightly more legroom in the 4Runner as I do in my GMC 3500 Dually.....I tried on quite a few different SUV's, and kept coming back to the 4Runner - just for the legroom. Haven't noticed the door being a problem at all.
