Need new shocks / xreas?

I have an 05 SE which comes standard with the xreas. I have owned the 4runner for a couple of weeks and with any new purchase it takes driving it a while to start noticing things. First let me say that we have been very happy with the new purchase and love the ride of the 05. I also have a 99 Limited 4x4 and it's not even close to the on-road ride of the 05. My one concern that I have when going over speed bumps it seems the front end is "bottoming" out as you go over the bumps. If it appears this way over speed bumps I would hate to think how it will handle anything off road. Maybe its just the feel of the xreas suspension... any thoughts? Truck has 113K miles and is in great condition.

I have an 05 sport as well with similar mileage. While I haven't been able to find a leak in my xreas it feels the same as what you're describing and for that reason I have a complete lift sitting in my basement waiting for the weather to warm up so I can install it.

I hope the front isn't toast, but I can't imagine it should feel this way... its great riding down the road and doesn't "float" or bob up and down when you hit a dip, but I really think its bottoming out over speed bumps...crazy..doens't make any sense. I'm not hitting them with any speed..I'm talking a few (3-4 mph).

The 4th gen suspension is pretty soft, even straight from the factory.

I have never changed the suspension in my 2007 140K 4Runner Sport - Went for MD inspection and my rear shocks are leaking - didn't pass. The rear has been feeling a little more bouncy lately.
Any suggestions for an upgrade (better ride/handling) before I change them out? I do a lot of highway driving.

Rip out XREAS (remove shocks and lines). And replace with some Bilstein 5100s up front and Bilsteins in the back. I have this setup and love it

I have the exact same truck, same issue but I KNOW my lines are leaking and shot. I just ordered Bilsteins for it from Toyota 4-Runner Front Bilstein 5100 Ride Height Adjustable Shocks 03-2009 w/ Optional Rear Shocks
Cost me 329.99 for all 4 shocks, and I have done a TON of looking around to say that these are by far the cheapest Bilsteins you will find. You don't have to lift it if you don't want too, can set at factory ride height and enjoy the better ride. :cheers:

So those are adjustible for stock or lifted? Sounds like a good idea. The dealer told me today that would replace the passenger side front shock at no cost. I still plan to level out the front at some point. What are some of the better options with stock suspension w/xreas?

Yes, you can set them at 4 different settings. This video does a great job of explaining them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBpLKyaG9BE They are OEM spec, so they are made to work just like original, but most people on here say they are so much better than stock. Then you get that added benefit of being able to level out the front end with them if you would like. One thing to keep in mind, although the X-REAS system was a good system, it is expensive to fix and the tubes connecting the shocks tend to get holes and leak. IF you decide to replace them, you have to replace them all at once with new shocks like the Bilstein's.
If you aren't going to go with new shocks right away, hell let them replace that one if they are going to do it free! I'd have them do it just to do it. lol. When you are ready to lift or just change shocks, if you take the system apart the right way you could even sell that x-reas stuff.
Not ready for shock replacement? You can level the front with a Daystar lift, or something similar.

Bilstein 5100's come as shocks only. If you want to replace other parts they should be purchased separately.

Ride quality is all relative. What I think is good, other dislike.

I am hopefully putting mine on this week, so I'll tell you how the ride is. They come with everything needed, it's just a shock. You may want to get the top bushing and plate for the front struts just to replace the worn out stock parts, but you don't have too. They are so cheap though it's worth it to just buy them.
Coils, are you adding heavy bumpers? winch? other things that weigh a lot? If not, then you probably don't need them. You can however get some more lift out of some good fj coils.
