Need opinion! Undercoat? Paint protection?

Hey everyone, new member here.
Just ordered a 2010 Limited with Nav, blizzard pearl on beige. It should be arriving in a few days.
Today the dealer suggested me to get the undercoat, paint protection, rust protection and leather protection package. I had my doubts and I want your opinions.
Do you think those are necessary? I have been maintaining my leather seats pretty well in the past so that is off the list.

For the rust protection they told me that water could get in between the door panels and cause rusting.

So what do you think?

um, no. your doubts are well-founded.
essentially, the dealer is "suggesting" you fatten up the padding on his/her sale.

Agreed! The dealers love to tack this on. The paint and leather protection are available from auto parts stores for a few bucks. The undercoat and rust protection ...well depends on how much they are charging for this...most likely to much. So I say no.

It was $365 for each individual protection and $970 for the whole package. So I was like, wait a minute, i gotta check with the folks on the forums

I would do the undercoat.

My last 4runner had the undercoating and it made a difference for road noise as the rubberized 3M coating acted as a deadening source on the frame. When I bought another 4th gen last year, it supposedly had the undercarriage coating but to my amazement, there was none compared to my '04...I was bummed because I noticed the difference.

Unfortunately, I bought the car used from a Ford Dealership so I couldn't do anything about it. I ended up deadening the rear wheel wells and hatch myself with second skin and it has made a big difference as I don't get a rear-fill road noise competing with my stereo...it's much quieter on the highways.

Hey, nice color combo, same as mine. I wouldn't pay extra for that stuff and wouldn't specifically ask for it. My 4Runner came with it, but I didn't technically pay extra for it. We had already agreed on a price and then the car the dealer found for me had the Toyoguard snake oil applied to it. It also had the crossbars and exhaust tip, but the dealer stuck to the price we agreed on.

Maybe if you live in an area where they salt the roads, the undercoating is a good idea. Here in South Carolina, I don't think it provides much benefit.

I'd like to hear what Toyota would have to say about the implication of such shoddy manufacturing as this implies.

How do they get the "rust protection" in between those door panels? By drilling holes? Smart.

$970 for 2 hrs labor and $50 worth of materials? Talk about building the margin.

Stuff like this really pi$$es me off ... just say no.

From what I have read elsewhere, undercoating is a scam.

Summing up from my own internet research:

Most new cars come with an undercoating from the factory for rust purposes.

Dealer applied undercoating is not as thorough and well-applied as the factory undercoating, causing spots where moisture can be trapped and actually increasing the conditions for rust in localized areas.

Here, I'll let motortrend sum it up - It's a 5 year warranty. No undercoating is going to give you any more guarantee than that.

Those are dealer packs that have huge profit margins and are a waste of money, IMO.
