I have a 95 4runner with a 8"axle and a gear ratio of 3.90 with 33" all terrains on, so I would like some feed back on what gear ratio should I upgrade to in order to get the power back from the tire lag.
Need opinions on gear ratios?!

I believe I already answered this on another thread, but the ratio that will get 33's acting like the stock set-up is typically 4.88. This will make it accelerate like stock, the speedo will be close to normal, and your top end will be just as it was before--the tire height and gears balance each other out throughout the rev range.

yea you did but no one else was answering and its always nice to read other peoples opinions. but since you know more about 2nd gens, 4.88 would be the most ideal upgrade for those tires then.

OK, an important detail.
With an auto trans you should go to the next lower ratio than you'd use with a manual.
So where the normal 'suggested' ratio for 33" tires would be 4.88, you'd want the next lower ratio, which is 5.29.

Fourwd1 is correct(as usual). Automatic trans suck up a lot of power as opposed to a manual trans. Hence his recommendation of 5.29s to regain better than stock performance. U still have overdrive which u will be able to use again.

OK sweet. i wasn't doubting him, just needed different opinions before i start messing with the diff, and is there a diff install kit that you guys would recommend.

Yep--it's called a reputable shop with a tech who has done hundreds of these. This is not the kind of thing to try DIY on if you're not familiar with them and have the proper specialty tools. Setting up a ring-n-pinion is a very skilled trade.

yea ive got a buddy that is a mechanic and we have our old high school auto shop that we go to for stuff like this. no i would never try to do this by myself

Gear ratio isn't related to the type of wheeling, it's a matter of tire size.
The goal is to return the engine back to the power band it was designed to operate in. Taller tires put it out of the power band, sucking power and mpg, regearing to compensate solves the problem.
I run 5.29 gears with my 36" tires, and with my 5 spd manual, the speedo is dead on, and that's a big clue your back where you should be.

With all due respect, how many R&Ps has ur mechanic buddy set up? As Bob stated earlier, this is a highly skilled job that u want done right the first time. Check out SD Ring & Pinion. One of our members recently used them and was extremely satisfied. Very professional and good guys too... :thumb3:

With the 3.0 and an auto I'd recommend 4.88's and 33's if it's your DD. A trail rig I'd say 5.29's, but that engine will be roaring every time you are on the freeway with 5.29's. I had 31's and 4.56's with my 95 and it up there with the RPM's. Plus 4.88's can be found in stock 4runners so you could just hit up some parts yards and not deal with having a shop install them. Less downtime for you and most likely less money. Look for 2nd gen's with the g144 (I think that's correct) axle code and you're good to go. They will have stock Toyota 4.88's.

So I got a quote from a local shop and they said 550 with parts + plus tax, is that a good deal?
