All, I have an opportunity to by a 1999 Limited 4 runner from my dad (original owner). My initial concern was the mileage seems to be high at 136,000 miles but then I thought, heck, it

1 big point goes to the fact you know who owned it, maintained it, and where it has been.

I have had 3 previous explorers and I was able to get from 150k miles on the 4.0l sohc, 170k on the old 4.0l pushrod version, and 200k on the 5.0l before any had any issues with the powertrain.
I am hoping to get at least 200k out of my 4runner. So far I have put 10k miles on in 3 monthes and am in the proccess of towing a 6x12 trailer 1200 more miles....

That is a good many miles, but you do have a few good points for the rig:

1.) You know the condition of the vehicle, since your Dad owned it. Being a limited, it should have all the bells and whistles. How are the leather seats doing, any cracks?

2.) 99 is a good year for 4Runners, a lot of improvements were done on this year. Reliability runs about 78% better than average for your rig, still expect a some problems with that kind of mileage. It should be nothing like a Ford, the transmission and engine should just go and go.

3.) I bought a used Toyota from my Dad at trade-in value, which to me, is a heck of a deal. That is usually considered wholesale, your Dad is going under trade, which is what he could trade in at. That to me would cinch the deal. (If you don't buy it, let me know, so I can take that rig off of your hands. )

Dealers play w/the numbers, they would not want a more than 5yr old car w/milage like that. My guess would be closer to 5k, or less.

I am getting $8,912 for a Limited 4X4 White in Georiga, trade in price for a "clean" vehicle. 5,000 is more wishful thinking.

I would think your Dad should sell it to you for half of what it's worth. I would have a hard time taking any money from my kids.

Of course having a kid, I would say it is good to learn responsibility and pride of ownership. It is hard to say what is the best thing for a parent to do. It sounds like the Dad takes care of his car and is giving a pretty good deal.

(By the way Koz, I looked at your number of posts, you are leaving me in the dust. I guess I have been sleeping too much.)

Thanks to all for the posts..

I would not expect my dad to give it to me. He's pushing 70 and I'm 36. I'm well established and understand business is business. He needs something for a down payment on a new... (whatever) He's given me vehicles in the past (as a "kid").

I think its a good deal. Especially since you would get a 4runner that has been well maintained and you would be helping your dad out. its a win win situation IMO

heck. If I didn't pick up my 4Runner 9 months ago, Id be all over that one.

I have a 97 4Runner with 157K and it still runs strong. not to best on gas, ~18, but hey, I'll live.
