I found an 04 V8 model, Limited, leather, loaded. It has 166K miles, and seems to be well maintained. Guy is offering it to me for $9000. By blue book it seems like a good deal, but with the rising gas prices and the 166K miles, would what you guys advise? I have to give him an answer by end of day tomorrow, or he will be trading it in on Friday. Please give your honest, no BS, opinions.

Have you checked on KBB.com? What is the going price on these? I was in car sales for a few years and will tell u that NO dealer will ever give him anything but FAIR value on his trade. With 166K miles on it, its over on average mileage. Average being 15 thousand a year, on a 9 yr. old vehicle it should be arnd 135 thousand. If $9K is way under and he was meticulous about his maintenance then yeah its probably a good deal. Its a Toyota after all!

I wouldn't worry about the mileage, after all it is a Toyota. 9k is a good deal,if its in good shape. If you have the money for gas go for it. I have a 05 4x4 limited v8 I bought last year for 14k and I love it. I fill up once a week for $70-$86. I get about 18 mpg.

I saw an almost identical 4runner at the dealership i go to about a month ago here in CT, 04 V8 with 150,000 or so on it for 12,000. Your price sounds good if its in good shape. Since its a V8 you should try to find out if the timing belt and water pump was changed out at some piont, if not I would factor in that price as well because its due. The one I saw for sale had timing belt done at 120,000 at the dealership.

If he is planning on trading it in to a dealer, check online what the trade-in value of it is and offer him a few hundred $ more than that.

I have an 03' v8, one previous owner, limited, loaded, extremely well maintained, 140k, I bought it in January thru a private sale for $10,300.

I'd say $9,000 is a good deal, but be prepared, I drive very light footed, and calculate gas mileage by hand every fill up, I get around 16 and do a lot of mixed driving. The gas mileage is acceptable for this type of vehicle, but is still terrible in my book...

Thanks for the advice guys. I may pass on it due to the V8 and the insane amount gas has risen just in the last two weeks. :dammit:
When will this BS stop? :ybrick:

I have this exact 4Runner with the same mileage. I plan on keeping mine until 300k miles. No problems to speak of so far. I love the v8 power and smoothness, it's worth the extra $ for gas.

With that many miles it probably was driven on the freeway a lot which is good. Sounds like a good buy to me.

for what its worth, if you can, drive both a V6 & V8, also sport & sr5 or ltd, before you make a decision.

I wouldn't pass based on gas prices. I have the V6 and my mileage isn't that much better then the 8. And the 8 is buttery smooth...

I just picked up an 04 v6 SR5 last week for 9k. It has 132k, maintenance records and 9k left on the platinum zero deductible toyota extended warranty. Very good condition, but a few scratches on the lift gate. There was an 03 at the steelership for 15k with more miles and after I picked this up I found an 05 with about 145k on it private seller asking 12,5k. Hope this helps.

I can't comment on mpg of my V8 because it needs spark plugs, but usually the V6 only gets 1-2 mpg better than the V8. The V8 is also a lot smoother and doesn't have many head gasket problems like the 4.0 does (you can find those on the forum).
