And finally, one of the best things you can do to make the system sound better is to make your truck quieter. Dynamat the doors and make sure everything is rattle free. I was raving about my BIL's system as compared to mine, even though mine had better components; and then I listened to them both with the cars off and mine was better. His, however, was installed in a Lexus LS400; a much quieter car.

Agreed. Sound deadening can make a $500 system sound like a $1000 system.

Go with a better head unit - Sony is generally regarded as junk, especially the Xplod line, and add some sound deadener to the door.

One thing is true about Car Audio in general, no matter what your application is, if it says JL on it, better can be had for less.

OP my honest recommendation since you are not planning on adding any external amps, and maybe replacing speakers in stock locations would be this headunit.

Pioneer's have had the best internal amplifiers in my experiences, with Clarion and Kenwood being the worst.

Also, their iPod interface was second only to Alpine.

It will have all the features you need, buying a 250$ headunit and not adding any amps is like putting full stainless exhaust on a stock civic sedan.

If you wanted to stay with JVC, I would recommend this one:

It has USB/Aux/CD as well as all the regular radio features... I have it in my rig hooked up to a subwoofer and it's awesome! Though I'm not sure how much you want to take a deaf guy's word for it.

I have a JVC unit, with stock speakers in all doors. I added a sim powered sub under my seat. I couldn't be happier, and I'm only $250 or so into it. Highs are good, and the sub gets the lows that the stock speakers can't. I'm going to say its the Sony unit, as you had good sound with the JVC unit previously.
I am by no means an audio expert, but I can tell you what I think sounds good. And you don't have to spend a lot of money to get good sound.

Tell me more about this sub of yours, mine just sits in my garage, the back of the car is my dogs territory, don't want it to get ripped up. Then I'd have a solo baric for my work truck hehe

Bought it at Crutchfield, its their brand. Take a look about halfway down the page in my build thread, a talk a little bit about it. Just fits under the driver seat, and I can control it easily with the dial remote.
