I'm still not convinced that I'm keeping my 1st gen. I keep going back and forth. Honestly, I think if the right deal fell on my lap I wouldn't turn it down. It will cost a little bit but I can make one do the same thing that my runner does not. It will be a LOT more comfortable for a DD and have more power on a stock drive train.
However, all vehicles I have had has never stayed stock. They have ALL had some serious modifications in some sort. So getting another 3rd gen and keeping it stock just won't do.

Go buy a 3rd gen and give your 1st gen to FOG's son. You can watch him build it and maybe get to wheel it once in a while.

*Reminder, John (Zsasbo) now owns that Runner and it's because his Tacoma, once built up and taken out on a dusting off run, got rolled. Basically (IIRC) he went into a competition rig with a tow vehicle, and went to this b/c he wanted something dual duty since like me he has a kid now. He lives nearby and I'd be happy to ask him his impressions overall on it and might be able to get him to chime in.
I'm sort of off and on the same boat as you with my 2nd Gen, wanting a little more power, maybe newer, etc. I do maintain it but today when I walked out and noticed the sealant on the door hinges pulling away and a little rust starting to develop I figured, f-it...
Time to do that engine swap and make the doors removable. :fro:
I can build out mine the rest of the way I wanted and it's still the best dd (daily-driver/dual-duty) rig I have had so far.
Just do the swap and buy the wife something of her own, marriage afterall is all about compromise.

I like that point. The "Everything's for sale for the right price." and "I didn't get into this hobby to worry about money, I do it for the love of all it is about." logic applies nicely.
Heck, now you got me wanting to build up a 3rd-Gen, damn you!

SVD, I totally understand the whole comfort issue, whether to keep momma happy or for yourself. That was one of the first things that struck me when I got my first Runner (a '94)--I took it offroad the first week, and it was almost weird (in a good way) rolling along through the woods in total comfort. My first 4x4's were (shh, don't tell...hehe) CJ-7's, and they were purely utilitarian--they were awfully fun, and I kinda liked the quirkiness of the barebones style, but there's a lot to be said for being in the backcountry AND being comfortable while there. It would be awesome if you can swing both a trailrunner and a DD, but if not, I wouldn't blame you for going a bit newer--as long as it gets the proper mods for some fun!
