I just bought a 2001 4runner and after driving it for two days the check engine light came on. I had the code read at auto zone and then came home and googled 4runner P0770. From what I read it is the SL Solenoid that may be bad. I am hoping that is all it is and that I can get it fixed for just a few hundred dollars. But if the solenoid is bad then from what I read it is most likely the torque converter, which I am not sure how much that costs to repair? My other worry is that it has a new radiator. The guy I bought it from said that he got a new radiator because it was leaking. I questioned him about the whole pink milkshake transmission thing and he said the only problem he has ever had with transmission was an actuator switch that caused it to get stuck in 4 wheel drive. The car shifts great even after the code comes on I still haven't noticed any problems with it shifting, it still feels like it shifts smooth. I guess my main question is what should I do? Should I have the solenoid checked and if it bad replace it and see if that is all it needed? If the solenoid is good should I assume that it had the pink milkshake problem and stop their and just get a new transmission or should I invest in having the torque converter replaced? Also if it is a big enough problem that I need to have the transmission replaced is it possible to replace it with a manual transmission and how difficult is that if it is even possible. Is there a guide out there about converting to a manual transmission, I guess I will have to google that tomorrow. I just really hope that guy didn't lie to me, he seemed like such a nice, honest guy. I even had my mechanic check it out. Thanks for your help and sorry for the long post.
