Need some reassurance from you 17x9 285 peeps! (Airing down)

Needing some reassurance from anyone running 17x9s on 285s. About 4 years ago I had a set of 17x9 Konig six shooters on 285/70s, went wheeling on some wet rock @ about 11psi & unseated 3 tires, this forever scarred me for life lol. After that incident I went up to a 295 thinking the added width would help and it did until I went down to a 17x8.5 FN Five Star on 285/75s (which works as well).

Welp I'm going back to a 17x9, going to have to roll around on my 285/75s for a little while before I bump up to full 35x12.5s.

If you have 285s & 17x9s (non beadlocks please), chime in with some positive comments & lowest psi you've gone!

The tire itself plays a huge roll also.. but yes generally the less width the better the bead will hold.

I've also found that lower load rated tires tend to give a better overall result since you typically don't need to air them down as much to get a good footprint.

It's a trade-off with sidewall strength though. There are some D rated LT tires with good sidewall strength.

One hint (to keep in the back of your mind). If you are ever being winched out of rocks (with very low pressure and no beadlocks)... consider adding some air. in the front. I've seen a few beads come off it in that situation since it can put a really different kind of load on the tire. The rear tends to follow so not near as problematic in that situation.

Rigtec, thanks for chiming in, but I'm not concerned with fitting the tire, I'm more concerned about about airing down and getting some real world feedback. According to the chart, I should've been fine, maybe it was just bad luck, but I'd like to hear what other people have aired down too.

The lowest I have run is 15 psi. I've been a little hesitant to go any lower because I do a lot of solo off-roading.

I air down to 15 for soft sand and last time out I forgot and did a small donut with no problems. I remembered later that I probably should not have done that. No fast turns. Stock wheels 7.5 width and Toyo ATs 265.70-17
