Need some silence

I changed the muffler on my 98 4Runner Limited about 6 months ago at a chain muffler shop and it has sounded terrible ever since and getting worse. Can anyone tell me what muffler I could get that is nice and quite and fits like an OEM exhaust. By the way, I've priced and OEM exhaust at the dealer and they want $380.
Does that sound right? Am I stuck with having to buy an OEM muffler or does anyone have any "sound" (no pun intended) advice?

Dynomax Super Turbos have worked great for me on my 240sx and on 2 of my old 93 Ford Explorers. At idle you can't tell it from oem hardly.

WOT and you can hear a bit more thoaty sound - but nothing obnxious at all. Quite, but good flowing system.
 
I have one installed on my 4Runner. At idle (warm engine) it's not bad at all, cold engine idle is a little loud. There is a "drone" at around 2000 RPM, but sounds great at WOT (to me, I wanted more sound), and after a while you get used to the loud-ish hum it makes at certain RPM's (anywhere form 1750-2000). At cruising speed however, the sound isn't too bad at all.

No but I sure hope to soon. (got a line a 99 limited for a good deal, hope it goes through)

I tried Dynomax Super Turbos on 2 separate vehicle types so I was trying to give you an idea based on that.It was the same results for both vehicles.

Now for exhaust note... my TA with an open cut-out :yummie:

if you want it stock again look for a Tacoma muffler and weld that back on rather then buying it new from the Stealer. have you search Craigslist in your area? i know for sure San Fransico, Ca craigslist has a few.

This is the reason why its so hard to find a exhaust for the 4runner. all 4runner sound different.
 
lmao i asked the guy at the muffler shop when i got my vortex cherry bomb if i could keep my oem one. haha its just sitting in my shed.


idk if you can put that back on though?
 
If quiet is what you want, go back to stock.

If you're looking for some performance gain that is reasonably quiet, go with the longest available magnaflow.

Heys guys, sounds like Magnaflow is the most popular.
Does anyone know which exact model Magnaflow muffler will do the job?
 
I posted a link to the exact muffler I have in my prior response. Go any shorter than the 28" and you'll get an earful.

I recommend you go with the polished finish because it is constructed of 304 stainless steel. The satin finish is manufactured from 409, which is sufficient, but is nowhere near the quality of 304. Yes, the grade matters in terms of longevity and corrosion resistance.

You will need to find an exhaust shop to weld the muffler in place of your stock muffler. Will it fit? Yes.

I answered your second question in my earlier post:

"If quiet is what you want, go back to stock.

Dunno what else to tell ya buddy... :confused: Once again, if quiet is what you want and can't stand any exhaust sound whatsoever, then find a stock muffler.

No aftermarket exhaust will be as quiet or quieter than the stock muffler.
 
I have a Dynomax super turbo on mine and they said that they have no back pressure so it would flow better than the stock. I had the same results with the slight growl around 1700 to 2000 rpm and then you dont hear anything after that. It would be nice to hear some recordings of people having different ones on 4runners to get a better idea.

I also bought a dynomax slip on muffler with detached able silencer all i can say its worth of the money coz you can choose whether to be noisy or calm sound i also saw a promo on the net about Dynomax Rebate
