Need some tips on buying 00-01 4Runner...

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a 2000 or 2001 4runner. I really like the 4x4 Limited model but I don't have any problems going with a SR5 if I find a good deal.

Most of the ones I've looked at had between 85k-120k miles on them. How much mileage would you consider too much for a 00/01 model?

What problem areas do I need to keep a look out for when inspecting a used 00/01?

Lastly, are there any reliability issues I need to be aware of with 00/01 models?

I just bought a 99 w/ 185K miles on it, it really depends on the way it was taken care of. If it has all the service records, I wouldn't be afraid of one w/ 200k miles on it. My brother has a 99 w/ almost 300K. And the most expense thing he done is a timing belt.

reliability..just based on milage ...the timing belt ..as the previous person said.. as a person who works at a toyota dealer any 2000-2001 with under 120k is ok mileage..and finding one in good shape with under 100k is awesome. but also.. again.. how it was taken care of before is important. a good sign of good maintainance would be the tires.. and the brakes and the oil condition.

There were some differences in 4WD between 200 and 2001. IIRC the 2000 Limited has the same 4WD system as the 2001 SR5 and Limited. The 200 SR% was different. Searching the forums will let you know if this is a big deal or not. If oyu are not going off road it probably doesn't matter. I have a 2001 Sr5 hitting 75k and zero big issues. I am going to get the timing belt done soon..Like everyone said - proper maintenance and records are the best thing.
