Need some tire education

OK, I'm not educated on tires and sizes and want some knowledge. I've learned alot here and searched through all of the past posts on tires. Yet I am unable to comprehend what to look for.

Example: I have a 04 Sport with 17" tires. If I want to replace them with a "better" tire, I can't get the Dunlop's that came on it. I really like the Cooper Discoverer AT's but when I go to their website, it tells me they don't have a tire to fit my Runner even though they show a P265/70R17. Is this because I need something that doesn't start with a "P" or what?

What exactly should I be looking for? I don't offroad MUCH (but do sometimes while hunting) and travel about 55 miles each way to work each day. We do get snow and ice here all winter long and I go up and down Afton Mountain (fog and snow on I-64) every day.

I don't really care about Revo's or BFG's, I want to know what exact size I should be looking for. ANy recommendations would be greatly appreciated but I really want to know what I should be looking for when buying tires. I don't want to go into a shop and simply say "what do you think is best?"

I have the 265/70-17 revos---and do off roading, Costco, as well as some other tire retailers, list the OEM size as the size above, while the stock Dunlops were 265/65-17. The larger profile tire does not rub, but does make the speedo off by about another 1 mph. The 'P' designation is for a passenger car tire, which means that it has a 2ply sidewall, allowing for more comfort and more sidewall flex. A tire such as the Bf Goodrich All-terrain in a 'LT'. or light truck tire, offering a 3 ply sidewall which would result in a rougher ride but also more puncture resistance especially while aired down for offroading. Hope that helps.

FYI-I love my Revos-they do not rub either.

I think your running into a problem with fit because your original tire size (the dunlops) are 265/65/17. Therefore, a search using the vehicle selector brings up this size. As you can see people are able to run a slightly bigger tire 265/70/17. This tire is 1 inch bigger in diameter and doesn't cause any rubs say the people who have them.

Now that you may know what size your really looking for...you can go straight to the specifications or sizes charts and look to see if they carry your size.
