Need some tire suggestions

Duratracs of BFG A/Ts?

Okay its time for the KM2's to come off, getting new ones next week. I originally decided on Yokohama ATS after considering those and the General Grabber AT2. But Discount told me they are on national backorder for 4-5 weeks. Unfortunately I'm set on doing it next Friday so I'm finding the best of what's available. I have an appointment as of now for another set of BFG All-Terrains but seeing how this is going to be my third set of them I'd like to find something different. I'm looking at Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs now so I'd like to hear your opinions. Either vote or suggest something different. I'm continuing my wheeling hiatus for at least another year while I gather money and build further instead of rebuilding. Looking for something with a semi-aggressive look and a nice feel. Especially with the new dvd system I'm looking to calm the interior down and make it like a home theater setup, gotta start with the road noise :) Thanks for any input, we'll see the results on 5/28!

Out of those two I would go with the Duratracs. If you want an even smoother ride why not go with the TerraGrappler or LTX?
 
ok so i just got 2 tires replaced yesterday from a friend at discount... i was talking to him about how i want a new set of tires soon and he told me that the bfg all-terrains are great (which i current have) but be sure not to get the duratracs. i wanted them bc i like the aggressive look but he told me that he sees trucks/suvs that almost all have problems with having even wear and will begin to wobble and make weird wearing on them such as cupping. So he told me to get nitto terra grapplers since they are better and actually cheaper too so its a win win.
 
I'm almost 8 months and almost 6000 miles on my Duratracs and have had no issues with them and they still are showing no wear at all. I am a bit anal about rotations and proper inflation as I rotate every 4000 miles and check pressure every couple of weeks.
 
i had the BFG's on my 2000 and they were great. got me where i wanted to go and they were very quiet too. my dad runs them on his tacoma and he does probably 90% on road and get about 60k miles out of them. he won't buy anything else. i have heard good things about the Duratracs too so i am tempted to try those as well. i think you will be happy with either.

PS..how did you like the KM2's?

That's complete BS. Those problems are probably caused by people who fail to rotate them properly. Wobbling could be caused by a bad rotation which is not the tire's fault.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I'm starting to look at the Toyo Open Country A/T. The tread is somewhat aggressive but the sidewalls are pretty modest, I'm hoping the large size will offset that fact a little. Doesn't show them as being available online so I'll have to call them in the morning
 
I don't think ATs would look very good on your truck honestly. IMO an M/T would look more appropriate with that kind of height.
 
YA i know wat u mean... my friend does really good jobs on his balancing and im not completely sure on the duratracs. just speculation that given said by him, though personally i am still thinking bout getting a pair bc i liked my old goodyear tires despite the hate by many on them.

I hear you on the Duratracs, but unfortunately I'm looking at longevity and road manners this set. This is my fifth new set of tires for it and I've exhausted lots of different styles, I'm leaning towards a mellow style this time around. I've got the dvd player, starting to redo my interior and sound deaden the entire cab, I'd like to get some nice tame tires to complement that. I've been there and back with this thing, I have no shame in my beautification stage. Let's not forget its big picture plans in the coming months....but for now I think I'm leaning towards the Toyo's
 
toyos are really good from wat ive heard... i dont know alot of ppl with their ATs but im sure theyre a great product just from seeing how their MTs hold up. So how is the magnaflow doing with the want for the cab to be a bit quieter... i thought bout getting the magnaflow 18" if its not too loud or a bit longer. Sry not trying to get too off topic!
 
I'm in the same situation - requiring new tires...

I've had Toyo Open Country AT's in the past and they perform pretty well off-road (even when on stock rims) as I kept up with most of the big boys in our club. Some even remarked at me doing so well with AT's...

I can't justify going to a MT tire at this point - I use the 4Runner for snowboarding and mountain biking so although it will see some offroad use, most will be on road. The added weight of an MT is also a disadvantage - 63lbs vs 39lbs for a 265/70/17.
 
I've had mine for close to 3k miles, a few trips offroad, and I absolutely love them. They are very quiet - slight whine, won't even call it a hum really. Only time I hear it is with the windows down on the freeway. They handle wet weather great. They aren't showing any sort of wear yet, but I'm pretty meticulous with rotation too. I say for a vehicle of your caliber, an aggressive A/T is the only other way to go, if you aren't going M/T. I say go for the DT's. That way you aren't stuck with big goofy looking street tires, and if you "hiatus" gets too tough, you can hit some moderate trails with out worrying about sidewalls exploding or slicks killing your off road ability...

They really aren't insanely aggressive... I like 'em... :) I can get more pictures for refence if you need them..
 
So far I've got about 15,000 miles on my Duratracs, mostly city and highway. They appear to be wearing ok. I've rotated them once and noticed the usual outer edge wear on the front tires, but I know my caster has been out of spec the whole time. Two previous sets of tires have also worn more on the outer edges so I don't think this is a tire issue, probably more a lifted IFS issue.

They are a quiet all terrain tire, so no issues there. Street manners are fine too. Wet weather traction is ok as long as you drive 'defensively' although I will say they have excellent grip in all conditions under heavy braking. During the 25" snow storm we had here in February I was very impressed with their snow grip and handling. Not sure if you get much snow in your neck of the woods but at least you know.

I think the Duratracs are a great looking tire too. They will certainly compliment your fine 4Runner and since you're in a 'beautification phase', looks will be important in your overall happiness :)
 
Looks like the duratracs will be about around the Toyos. I've heard great things about the Toyo's AT off road performance, but damn the sidewall is just so bare! I'll have my decision made by 5 today. Apparently there are only 5 sets in the country within Discount's reach so I gotta act fast
