So this morning about 6 I started up my 4runner and it started and ran no problem going to and from school. However later about 10, when I tried to start it the starter just clicked and clicked and clicked. Up to now I haven't been able to start it. I cleaned off the battery terminals nest I could and still no go. This happened really suddenly it isn't something that's been going on over time. I read a bunch of threads but none that seemed to match my problem. Any help guys?

I'm assuming you've tried to jump it already? If not try that. If that doesn't work its probably your starter

I had this issue with mine after ruling out battery and alternator. It was the starter contact. Pull the starter and look up how to change contact in youtube. I changed the whole starter just because of mileage but could have gotten away in ordering starter contact kit. I saw the kit on ebay.

Thanks for the help guys. I had tried jumping it the morning but it didn't work. So I tried it again later and it had to sit on the cables for a good 15 minutes to start. Even then it idled really low and kept dying. I let it run for half an hour and slowly the idle rpm came up until I could drive around. So far no problems. I think the battery was just totally dead.

Check the voltage of your battery.

Open voltage∗ at 20C (68F):

12.6—12.8 V = Fully charged
12.2—12.4 V = Half charged
11.8—12.0 V = Discharged

∗: Voltage that is checked 20 minutes after the key is removed with all the lights turned off

Get the charging system tested at an auto parts store to see how the alternator is.

you can't charge a battery by driving around for 30 minutes. looks like your battery is dead. you need to charge it overnight or if the battery is really old, just get a new one.

the click click click is typically a dead battery.

Click, nothing, is typically the starter, but also could be a dead battery.

I went through a lot of the same symptoms which turned out to be a charging issue and a battery that wasn't up to par. My issue was mostly related to my dual batteries and the stock alt not being able to keep both charged until I made some changes.

So I'd test the battery first, then the alt, then the starter especially being that the starter is going to be the hardest to remove/replace.

Ironically mine gave the one tick last night and no start. Putting in some new starter contacts today. It was just only a week ago i had the transmission replaced.

Why did you need a transmission???

My friend (f) wanted to try out driving on the beach sand. So i handed the keys while buzz (drunk?) She bogged down and gave it a few revs and no luck. Another friend pulled it out. Didn't think too much and sober up for the rest of the day. Drove home later at night and truck starts slipping after almost 2 hours on the road. Towed it home. Thank you AAA! Short story is the input shaft seal leaked and burnt up the torque converter and left some part gouged. Picked up a used low mileage for $700ish. Shop says probably the shifting back n fourth got the tranny hot which toast the seal. idk still bitter....lol

I did see that last night and put in the order with amazon one day shipping. The parts link you posted stated it as not compatible but i still ordered it. Just got a noticed that it's delivered. Will R&R tonight

Thanks by the way!

You are correct that it says it's not compatible. No parts kits are listed as compatible, so i purchased a few of them and found the one that had contacts that were the closest shapes/sizes and used it. Heck, even the dealership told me I had to replace the whole starter. ~$13 and some time and it's been working perfectly for over nine months now.

Glad I could help!! :thumb:

DisguisedRope is correct with the amazon link. Everything fits fine except the plastic spacer broke off and i had to come up with something in it's place. Leftover polyurethane bushing and some gasket maker should do for now. Being that I'm not that tall made it that much harder to get to the top screw. She starts!

Just thought that I'd piggy back off of this thread.

I just bought a high mileage '05, and I noticed that the radio would reset itself and the instrument cluster would go insane while driving from time to time. Turns out the battery wasn't fastened down nor grounded into the body of the car. I ordered the necessary parts and made the repairs a week or so ago.

Fast forward to today: The car only clicks when I turn the ignition, and the alarm will intermittently go off until I shut it off with the fob. I hooked the battery up to cables and, although it didn't start, the alarm wasn't going off. It was still just clicking, however.

Is this just a case of the battery dying and fooling the alarm into thinking someone is trying to tamper with the battery? Or do I have a bigger issue on my hands?

you did not mention how old your battery is. I think it's just your battery or check the voltage.
