Need suggestions for weatherproof case for roof rack!

Hey everyone,

I installed the Frontrunner slimline II rack a couple weeks ago and am looking for a case to store full time on the rack so I can keep miscellaneous things up there. Something slim that will also fit once I put a rooftop tent up there.

I wanted to drill a couple holes and use some gasket washers to secure one of these on the front side of the rack but not sure if there is something similar but cheaper that other people are using.

I've used this one for awhile now and it's worked fine. It does have a gasket seal to make it water proof. I'm assuming much cheaper than the pelican as well.

I just mounted a Plano 42" weatherproof rifle case on my rack for a weatherproof toolbox this past weekend. So far so good!

I have used pelicans/storm cases extensively throughout the years. The lifetime warranty is worth the extra price initially.

I bolted one of these across the back of my Gobi Rack. Fits just perfect. A lot cheaper than the Pelicans etc. Use for my straps and some recovery gear.

I like the price of the plano cases and they have great reviews on amazon as well. I am thinking of trying their 44" case and using the tie down rings that I got from Front Runner with some neoprene backed washers to bolt it down. Then I will also have some tie downs inside the case if I need to secure anything.

Pelican case. Worth the investment though i drilled into the case rather than the rack.

I'm confused. Why buy a $100-$200 waterproof case and then drill holes in it for mounting? Seems like that defeats the "waterproof" purpose.

What am I missing?

Yeah, and why put stuff that needs to stay dry on the roof? I get not wanting to totally fill up the inside/don't have room. But that's why you put stuff up there that can get wet and the good stuff inside.

can't speak for other people but for me it's about wanting heavy stuff low and light stuff high (at least as much as i can). i want something to get pillows/bedding and maybe clothes in a bag/case on the roof because they are bulky but don't weigh much so i can use the lower interior space for heavier camping stuff.

mine has recovery stuff in it so it's not horrible if it gets a little wet. That said 4 small bolt holes in the bottom of the box... with washers and silicone. Not really much of a way for water to work its way up and into the box.

A non sealed box (as in no gasket) with a seam around the entire side, is going to get water in it.

Because I cram so much crap in the cargo area that I want some things to be easily accessible.

Reviving this thread a bit, but I was curious if someone might provide be able to provide a list of the parts and sizes needed for mounting the pelican case on a gobi stealth? from what I've seen its just u-bolts, washers and nuts? Silicon if I want to seal it up further? Super basic, but just want to be sure before ordering.

On my previous rig, I had a custom aluminum lock box made to fit the rack. It was water tight and lightweight. I can't remember the cost bc it was back in 2001 but I still have it now mounted on my trailer. I'd do it again. Here's an old pic:
