Rooftop cargo box ROAM?

I want to add a rooftop cargo box to my 4R but it seems there are not many waterproof roof top specific boxes. Seems many use gun cases but i am not a fan nor am i confident in there waterproofing.

Basically i am looking for exactly this:

Problem is these dumb dumbs provide no way of mounting the waterproof case without making it not waterproof by having to drill holes to mount it. So i would have to do some serious fabrication.

I currently have the stock roof rack and a set of Victory roof rails with my Maxtrax mounted to them so the rails are spaced ~38" apart (box will need to mount in some way at that 38~ space).

I'm down to getting this ROAM box and doing some serious fabrication with some kind of bracket. But i figured i would check in with you guys if you had any better ideas?

I also like the piston the ROAM box uses as well as its low profile. All ill be putting in it is my recovery/emergency gear. Thoughts?

I have the roam boxes as well, they are great. I'm also not a fan of drilling holes in the bottom to mount them down.

I use ratchet straps. On each side of the lip on my roam boxes is a slot to run the strap through. It takes some maneuvering to get it just right to strap it down so you can still open the lid without unstrapping it, but it can be done.

I would, but it would have to be super low profile (~8" H) and be able to fit beside my Maxtrax on the roof.

I may have to try the straps, the slots may not line up to my rails that are 36/38" apart. I think the slots on the long side start at about 6".

I also spoke to ROAM and the guy said they will be coming out with a mounting system soon.

Also heard that drilling holes voids their warranty. I do not have Roam specifically, one of the Plano gun cases, but I just put silicon around the bolts and threw some desiccant inside once installed. I personally havent had any issues or leaks.

Nice cases and similar in price. But all of them start at about 11" high and not quite long enough.

Glad someone makes mounting brackets. But i would then need to buy a Sherpa rack for like 1k. lol Maybe i can modify them?

They mount to any extruded cross bar but I'm sure you can modify them to fit different racks. I have it mounted to my Prinsu rack. I actually had to cut off 4mm from the top of the bracket because they sit to high and prevent the case top from sealing correctly. After doing that its been solid. I'll run it through the car wash for watertight integrity and report back haha!

Good to know, i don't have an extruded cross bar. So i will definitely fabricate one myself for an exact fit. Looks like you got the 83L, is it deep enough for most things?

Its got decent real-estate, good for recovery and camping gear. I just mounted it so i haven't placed anything up there yet but I noticed the locking eyelets are tiny. Can't fit a normal size lock so I'll have to use something smaller. Something to think about when determining what to put up there especially for long periods of time

On my Maxtrax i used my cable gun locks since they are small. Seems to work and also implies the gun that used to use the gun lock is ready to be used if necessary. lol

Just ordered the 83L ROAM case. Ill need to do some creative fabrication to mount this thing. Its just so annoying to have to do this on a $300+ product.

Ill post back when i fabricate a solution. Hopefully it's not just ratchet straps. lol

Thinking on the lines of a aluminum bracket or latch system. Would love for it to be easily removed.

Well after 6 hours and 2 trips to Home Depot i got it mounted. Holy crap i shouldn't have to put this much effort into mounting a $300 box on the top of my 4Runner.....

First i fabricated aluminum mounts that just wouldn't work with the places available to mount on the ROAM box. So i ended up going with plywood and just getting it up there.

I'm extremely disappointed in ROAM's lack of mounting options and the ones they have are really only for straps and not even close to the spacing needed for any standard roof rack. Lucky i got a set of Victory rails but even then....

I will likely try and find some sheet metal, maybe some in aluminum sheet to get this done just right. Not easy to find in thick 10x20 in aluminum let alone bigger. This way i can make a less bulky easy to remove mounting system.

I have 105L ROAM case attached to my BajaRack. I drilled two holes near the rear corners of the case, then used heavy duty zip ties to laterally hold the case from it's straps onto the rack. Its been on for over a year. No issues with stability of the case, water getting in, or anything damaging to the items within. Its has been through severe thunder storms, extremely windy conditions, very bumpy roads, and intense city driving. The only con is that if there are a lot of bugs out, expect to have a monumental amount of splats on the case.

Nice setup! I'm looking for a way to mount a roam box on a prinsu as well without drilling holes on the box if possible . How secure are the sherpa mounts? Not much info out there regarding these mounts but from the pics it looks like someone can just unscrew the bolts on the mount and walk away with the box?
